I've always liked Craig Finn's solo work, but it's never gripped me like the best from The Hold Steady does, but each album is usually good for an absolute banger or two. Always Been is at least Finn's best since 2017's We All Want the Same Things. Its textured production, owed to Adam Granduciel, is tight and organic, and Finn's songwriting is as lived-in as ever. To say this caught me off guard is an understatement, and I can't wait to revisit it.
