To be honest with you, I haven't really checked out an Elder record since Reflections of a Floating World. I apologize if this is incorrect, but the impression I got was they toned down on the metal influence and focused more on progressive rock while maintaining that stoner influence. With the thought of them being less metal and their heaviness being the reason I gravitated to them in the first place, I've ignored them for a bit. Sometimes my preferences mislead me and will stray me away from shit I may actually like. I decided to give Through Zero a whirl because it came out on the same day the new Boards of Canada and Funebraum came out and-- wow. Sure, it's more of a "rock" record, but this thing is still heavy and rips. I totally forgot that Elder are also gods at riff creation. So many damn earworms on this thing. I also found myself addicted to the energy on here. Might be a weird comparison, but the overall power and energy of this record reminds me of something you would hear in a more mature anime show. I apologize if that comparison is offputting, but I mean it with the best intentions because it's a reason I keep coming back to it. Glad to know Elder still has it. Now I should definitely check out the records I have missed. (Edited)

Anything labelled Progressive Rock with a 2026 release date promises to be interesting and, hopefully, also good. This release by a band that was previously totally unknown to me, proves to be both. Without ever threatening to be at all original when compared to its musical parents and grandparents, it stands out as one of the better releases of 2026 so far and no true lover of prog Rock will want to hear the years best without hearing it at least once.
