odd sounding album, not for me..
My album of the year for 1955, and really, my favorite drummer. Hard to pass on Krupa or the Joneses one or all, but there's just something about this guy's ear for a groove...
There's a movie that shows up on cable/satellite periodically called "Jazz on a Summer's Day" about the 1956? Newport Festival, and this band's segment is one of the high points; but the whole thing is terrific, especially Anita O'Day's appearance.

They have a very orchestral way of playing, it's understated and extremely interesting, very well done.
You have probably seen P.T. Anderson's an excellent film "Boogie Nights" (1997). If you are, you have heard of Chico Hamilton's music. The beginning of the film a porn director (Burt Reynolds, as made of the role) arrives home late at night with a porn actress (Julianna Moore, would be too good for nothing more than a pornstar!), and goes over to the turntable (LP) and put a playing Chico Hamilton's music. The currently playing track is "The Sage". The director has come home from the disco - and want to hear something really great! Great scene. Thanks to this movie, I found this album.
