'59:1 Walking on Sunshine
The bass sounds like it’s coming from below. From the earth. A bit muted but organic and full. Which fits the intro of "So What" just fine. Since its sounds like a morning garden slowly coming to life as the sun rises. And then – bam – day breaks. Trumpet like rays of sunshine beckon us along out of the garden and onto a neighborhood stroll. This is the 50s. People were friendly. And we smile and greet our neighbors 1950s style as we stroll along.
Ant that’s just the first couple of minutes of "So What"! Clearly this album needs no introduction. No more fanfare. But, I cannot help but gush about it nonetheless. It is all the that it is said to be. And that’s pretty cool.
I don’t know why it’s called Kinda Blue. Nothing blue or sad about those first two songs. This is walking on sunshine music! It’s melodic, fluid and oh so cool. Nothing can touch you. Music that makes me think of strolling. Any kinda of strolling. Not in any rush. Just strolling.
Mellifluous. I don’t think I’ve ever used this word before. But it immediately came to mind when listening to Miles trumpet in “Blues In Green”. Now THIS is a blue song. So I stand corrected. And I just love the spacing of the song. Everyone is so patient and complementary to each other. Like soft, seasoned lovers. I guess that’s the coolest thing about the entire album, right? Just how locked in all SEVEN of them were.
BUT to me, Paul Chambers, the bass player, is the secret weapon here. I honestly was not familiar with him and had to google “bass player Kind Of Blue”. Will have to check out more of his projects.
Anyways, that’s enough. We all know how killer it is. Can anyone recommend an album similar to it from this period? Would love to explore more stuff like this.
