the line between a compilation vs just an album that happens to be by various artists can often be pretty arbitrary. When it comes to things like those Folkways albums that are basically an assortment of tracks recorded live by various ethnographers or whatever (Music of the Ituri Forest, Songs of Aran, etc) they are often framed as albums in the traditional sense, but for the purposes of this chart I am filing them under compilations. But again the distinction isn't really that significant, mainly it's "collection of tracks recorded specifically for the release" vs "collection of tracks yanked from the vaults". I'm looking highlight both.
couple of exclusions though:
not including any soundtracks
not including any like label sampler/retrospective releases (e.g. The Sun Records Collection, A1: Raster-Noton . Archiv 1, etc.)
not including stuff like Warfare Noise and Tropicália: Ou Panis Et Circencis, as I see those as more like your classic split LP or just a collaborative album than a compilation really
not including anything from the Street Sounds series, because while there's like a dozen releases in that series that are as good as anything in this chart, they're also really just good old fashioned DJ mixes masquerading as compilations. Still gold though. Listen to Street Sounds Electro 2 right now thanks.
not including shit that sucks
some of these can be a bit harder to find than others, feel free to PM me if you need help listening to something ;)
