For me, power metal is the apex of what heavy metal could be.
In the early eighties, it came out largely from the question “what if you played Judas Priest three times as fast?” and eventually incorporated soaring melodies, neoclassical techniques, and concepts straight out of musical theater with the iconography of Tolkien and Howard.
Today, sometimes it feels like all sense of memorability and timelessness has faded from the genre. It’s a strange thing to say since so much of the genre has had a partial renaissance in the previous decade, but I look at many records and start thinking that creativity has been spread so thin that nobody can make iconic melodies or instrumental sequences that will transcend the year it was created in. I don’t think a lot of bands have it. I’m happy to say Silver Bullet, a power metal outfit from Finland, is among those that can call themselves an exception.
There are harmonies I will remember. Riffs that are distinct. Much like how Stratovarius had Black Diamond and many other tunes, Silver Bullet has a few on this record. Following in the tradition of not only Stratovarius but also Sonata Arctica, you can see Silver Bullet is inspired here and more importantly: having fun without venturing into self-parody. Not a single song on this record inspires apathy or millennial cynicism, and in recent years I have been feeling more-and-more of it. It’s unfortunate, but the fact that Silver Bullet can transport me back to the feeling I had when I discovered Sonata Arctica, Gamma Ray, or Stratovarius for the first time is invaluable.
