Rating metrics: Help Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)

This album is rated in the top 16% of all albums on BestEverAlbums.com. This album has a Bayesian average rating of 74.1/100, a mean average of 75.3/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 75.3/100. The standard deviation for this album is 9.4.

Peaceful and evocative, the song structures are loose, the vocals unclear and the instruments restrained, Furling is an album with great atmosphere. The songs are slow and calming, they work great with Meg's vocals, they've got the Elizabeth Fraser quality of being beautiful and totally incomprehensible. I'm honestly kind of glad that I can't really work out the lyrics in here, it lets the vocals be as lush as the surrounding instruments without any distraction. I get on best with the more repetitive tracks which works around the same motif, Will You Follow Me Home is probably the best of these and really exemplifies how this record takes a type of music I associate with 90s and puts it through a hazy filter without ever being dull. There's lots of individual rhythms to take in, but the chances are it will wash over you as a collected sound.

Well well. I'd not listened to Meg Baird in quite some time. I'd had a bit Daugter on and intended to listen to Mazzy Star when Meg pooped up next on the streaming and it fitted perfectly. Not at all what I would have expected of her but exactly what I wanted. Apparently she's mainly on piano and accompanied by a band. I'm loving stuff at the moment that just finds that sweet spot and sits there. It doest have to be heading to a big chorus or anywhere, it just is and that's fine. Even the more folky stuff isn't the ethereal thing I would associate with her. Lovely.
