Top 100 Music Albums of 2024 by Arthurknight

2024 has been an immaculate year for new music, by my estimation (and I have tried to actually do this with some math based off my own ratings data) the best year for music since 2003!!! There has been so many new breakthrough artists, and while many of the previous mainstay/consistent artists released some duds, they too for the most part came through. While the 20's have so far been a really mixed bag (I suspect covid may have something to do with that), I perhaps for the first time feel really optimistic that we're moving back into an era of great underground music again.

Obviously Kanye's attempt to aestheticise the edgy fetishisation of neo-nazism is by far the worst new music of the year; no surprises there. That said, I really do have to give it to some bold attempts at outdoing him from trash music pioneers like Green Day and TayTay, alongside some truly awful bandcamp releases that received far too much attention for what they are. However, the main garbage records of the year are either surpising to exist at all (like a new Linkin Park record which replaces Chester Bennington with -- you guessed it! -- scientology) or suprising failures from otherwise good artists (like Kim Gordon's whatever that was or the god awful comeback album from jazzrock legends Karate). On the whole maybe a higher proportion of disappointing releases this year than in the past, but this I think remains overshadowed by the gold we got.

You can't convince me that this album is about anything other than being a love-letter/swan song to long afternoons alone in your room playing around with a loop pedal. These songs reflect a period of life of listless free time and overwhelming uncertainty about what should be done about it; well why not make a record out of it?

To most, myself included, those beautiful moments where it all comes together are fleeting ephemera lost into the ether with a double tap of converse. Here, however, a methodical recording process has taken place rendering 10 time-capsules of the moment the riff works. So many times listening through this I caught myself vicariously saying to myself: "Yes well with the guitar in your hand of course you're going to repetitively drag this out for the next half hour because this is what its all about!" I'm sure this next part is not true, but I worry that the experience of this listen rests very heavily on that phenomenology; that this is the anxious guitarist's music and not some abstracted glenn branca-esque intellectualisation of it. The latter makes accessibility somewhat universalised, but for me, Feet Always Cold is all the better for eschewing this in favour of purity.

That said, it still shouldn't work as well as it does in the form of actual music, but I'm flabbergasted to say that every song not only justifies its length but insists on dragging you into its orbit. I don't say it lightly, and I acknowledge there so much bias on my behalf of feeling myself in its process so viscerally, but Feet Always Cold is the greatest album released in a decade.
