Rating metrics: Help Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some tracks can have several thousand ratings)

This track is rated in the top 2% of all tracks on BestEverAlbums.com. This track has a Bayesian average rating of 85.6/100, a mean average of 84.9/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 85.8/100. The standard deviation for this track is 12.6.

On first listen, when the album came out in 1970 and as a 12 year old boy who loved the first album, this was shocking. What the hell were they doing? This wasn't Black Sabbath. Had they gone soft already? Were they trying to be Pink Floyd for gods sake? So disappointed.

Then, you listen to it properly and it's a masterpiece of Psychedelic rock with a myriad of instruments and techniques being used. For me it showcases what phenomenal musicians the band were, should proof be needed.

As well as the use of "non Sabb instruments" like the bongos, Ozzy's vocals are perfect for the topic of floating through the universe with your lover. They fit perfectly.

It's a phenomenal piece of work. Probably Black Sabbaths greatest non metal track

This is actually my favourite on the album. It wouldn't be out of place in a film soundtrack. The bass is superb.

Paranoid is a great album in itself. This modest song, however, does not get its power from hard rock and stays away from an urgent political and social point of view. It's just so terribly beautiful and intriguing. Ozzy's voice is barely recognizable because of the effect on his voice, but it is precisely that voice that fits beautifully into the overall picture of the sound. The instruments (tablas, guitar, bass guitar, piano) are only present in a minimal way. Iommi's solo is melodic and keeps away from a difficult and a dangerous showing out. But it makes no sense to unravel all this. The whole is more than the sum of the parts. I can effortlessly play this track multiple times every day. Sheer mysticism. Great in its minimalist approach. Sabbath Bloody Sabbath should have had a new "Planet Caravan" instead of that corny "Fluff". Sabbath would later copy itself with "Zeitgeist" (from "13") and shouldn't have done that. Too transparent, no longer relevant and stripped of the special atmosphere that Planet Caravan dominates. Rating here is 100 / 100. No doubt about it!

I remember the first time I heard this I hated it. I thought "WTH is this" but eventually I grew to appreciate it and really enjoy it. It works extremely well in context of the album. Very interesting Ozzy vocals.
