Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. Hypnotic track. And those vocals. Victoria le Grande is the difference between this band and all others in this genre.

My favourite song of all time; it is simply the one I would choose to listen to the most at any given time. It is mixed-emotionally beautiful, it can make you feel happy when you're sad, or even if you're wanting to feel sad, the melancholic side of the song will make you feel that way. It is like a mystical emotional mechanism.
