One of Springsteen's top five of all time. This, a more bleak and realistic version of young love, as opposed to the more care free and optimistic duo in, thunder road, is Springsteen at the top of his game. This time, the couple aren't free to 'case the promised land', this time they're stuck, due to the shock of an unwanted pregnancy. There's no Thunder road here, all they have is the river, and that's as far as this couple will get to their hopes and dreams. As on the, darkness on the edge of town, Springsteen is now writing for adults in real and harder circumstances.
Masterpiece.
