That whole JayZ vs Isengrind thread ranks up there with some of the best/worst GARY and Naples threads. I'd almost suggest it rivals the classic greatest/favourite debate between joannajewsome and Naples.

I wish him luck in his quest, can't say I miss him though. Too high-browed for me in his latter days.

I suspect a lot of Poe’s antagonism came from a feeling of life struggles as well as this sort of belief that his input on the more obscure end of things weren’t really being appreciated. Did he have a meltdown and belittle others at the end? Yes, but there was a lot of antagonism from all-sides of things in that thread where that occurred. I’m actually quite happy I was inactive during this time because I’m not sure how I would’ve reacted (if at all) to the situation but at the end it did feel like there was an intent to ostracize over something that was perhaps a fit of a melodramatic tantrum where the more “artistic” side of Poe decided to put things into his box since his views on art are particularly strong. I’m going to try and communicate with him on RYM and I agree that he was particularly important to BEA in some way or form and if he hadn’t gotten banned perhaps he would’ve apologized near the end as I never saw him as pompous or self-centered, but rather passionate and starving for others to be able to talk about stuff he liked to the same sort of sphere of understanding and interest. Avant-garde fans are generally like these sort of lonely individuals who don’t know how to communicate and are opinionated about art and want more people to relate with their views or at the very least understand. Hell, I wish he’d come back in some utility but I know his pride is likely too damaged to even come up with the energy to do that let alone admit to apologize.

I liked Poe and appreciated all of his charts, and I mostly regret not rating/commenting on them because at the end of the day—we want to at least see our charts are cared about and our person valued. I know that’s one of my big desires on websites like this and rateyourmusic. I want to know I’m valued—I think Poe was the same.

Quote:
, it was to "influence"

Some people like this sort of mentor-student relationship even if they may or may not be worthy of being in that position. I've sort of adopted this twice, and it's nice to have this sort of respect of someone who appreciates everything you have to educate or explain to them. It's not inherently bad to want to be influential in this way, but I can see how some people definitely don't want to be coddled or put beneath somebody in that regard.

Quote:
When the whole Jay-Z and Isengrind fiasco was going on, I didn't realise that there were these arguments and when I got around to seeing those, this was my first exposure in what people were saying about him being "condescending" and "belittling other peoples tastes".

Also, this. I know I'm not terribly active throughout the entire year so perhaps I missed a streak of nonsense and ill behavior, but The Poe I saw wasn't condescending or elitist.

If you're missing The Poe then I feel bad for you son
cause I miss 99 users and The Poe ain't one.

He got his Poe patrol on his blow patrol,
Got more beefs than a legitimate troll,
Says Jay-Z's materialistic and the whole rap game blows,
Says that they aren't artists - what kind of facts are those?
Do we really want someone in here who would deny
an artist just because they live a certain way of life?
Suggests I listen to three hours of a birch tree grow -
"But it's got abstract qualities!" - well I don't give a shit, so...
These kids take his chart and then they copy and paste
so their friends will give them more cred for their taste;
Hipsters -
I don't know why you kids feel so pious
When you listen to half an hour of tinnitus.
His chart was cool, but take a look at Wolf's, old chum -
I miss 99 users and The Poe ain't one.
