- Post subject: Arranging Albums on Charts
|
This has been nagging at me for a while now, and I am curious if others feel the same.
Let's say I just added 70 albums of a Top 100 chart and I suddenly remember I forgot one of my 10 favorite albums. At the same time, the album currently at 30 has fallen out of favor with me and I wish to move it to the 50-60 range. With the current interface, this requires lots and lots of tedious clicking on the up and down arrows until the albums are in the desired position.
I wonder if there is a way to put a box next to each album in the "edit chart" page so users can simply assign a numerical value to an album which will then move to that position on the chart. Casual users may not find this important, but the most devoted users probably know exactly what I mean. If there is any way to remedy this problem, I, and probably many others, would greatly appreciate a solution.
If there are questions, or I have been unclear in any way, please respond -- even feel free to PM me -- so we can clarify things.
Love the site...thanks!

thanks for the feedback. Yes, I think this problem has become a bigger issue now that we have bigger charts (not that it wasn't a problem before).
I think with text boxes there are issues as well e.g. you might not be able to see which slot you are moving to (that part of the chart might be out of view), so you might sometimes be doing things from memory.
I think I'll have a look on a few other sites to see how this problem has been tackled elsewhere and see what other methods might also work here.

Thanks for the prompt response! I'm glad to hear that I'm not the only one who noticed this, and that the issue was already being considered. If I have any ideas I'll pass them along. _________________ My voodoo master, my machine, baby, will not stand in line...

I definitely agree - especially with the 100 charts we got now.
If the text box idea doesn't work, perhaps an additional up and down button that goes by 5 or 10 at a time. But text box still seems like the best idea. It would have to be one of those ones that automatically moves changes the values of all the other entries that are affected - otherwise numbers may double up and things get messy. e.g. when I change 12 to 10, 10 automatically changes to 11 and 11 automatically changes to 12.

There's also the system, and this could be tricky I don't know, whereby you click and drag each entry up and down. It's how you make lists in imdb and I think I've seen it elsewhere. But yeah could be complicated, not sure

I think dragging on a big list might be a bit fiddly to use. I might check out their site, though, to see it in action...

I know that on youtube when you're making playlists you type in the number you want and then the list rearranges itself. Don't know if it's possible here...

I think it was worth trying to add this functionality fairly quickly as large charts are now a bit of a PITA to manipulate. So, I've now implemented this suggestion using the original idea of a text box which is located next to each chart entry. You just type in the rank number that you'd like to move the album to, and your chart will then rearrange itself.
Let me know if you spot any problems with this. I've tried on my own chart and it seems ok, but mine is a bit smaller than some others...
(If things don't work as they should, pressing CTRL+F5 on the 'My Chart' page will force your browser to get the latest version of the code.)
