- Post subject: Categorizing charts based on music type
|
Here is a suggestion:
Currently charts can only be categorized based on time (year and decade I believe). It would be nice to be able to categorize them based on their musical type/form/style. For example: Classical Music, Jazz, Rock, Pop, R&B, and so on. I am saying this because: 1) I see some charts with specific music only (for instance Jazz) named the “The Best 100 Albums…”, and 2) I see a few charts that mix Rock and Classical Music, Rock and Jazz and so on. So, during the chart creation/edit process it would be nice to have a bunch of check boxes with the music types associated with the chart. These music types will be pre-defined by the application. The user should be given the ability apply multiple music types to the chart. For this to work it means that each album should be associated to a specific music type (or music types); then it can be added to chart only the specific music type (or types) are chosen.
Cheers,
Nick

i disagree. there are millions/tons (...) of albums that knows no genre boundaries. also some artists lean heavier to specific genres in one album and other genres in another. not to mentions the leanations towards a wide variety of genres within one album or indeed one track. badging albums will i think create chaos and possibly lead to war and contribute to segregation between members and visitors of this lovely planet on the internet machine.

There is a plan to introduce genre tagging across the site as a means of classification, but I think that will be as far it goes. It was debated at one stage to have 'genre' charts, but I think for reasons discussed before, & outlined by martintho, it might not work well for everybody & custom charts fulfil this function fairly well at the moment without placing restrictions on people's different ideas of what albums should (or shouldn't) be in each genre.
