Rating metrics:
Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)
This album is rated in the top 3% of all albums on BestEverAlbums.com. This album has a Bayesian average rating of 77.4/100, a mean average of 76.2/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 77.6/100. The standard deviation for this album is 14.9.

Not sure about the comment saying it's sonically great and if you don't agree you don't know hip hop. Well, the music sounds fine but sonically, the actual sound quality itself, is horrible. A lot of modern music is becoming unlistenable because of this. I'll persevere with this if I can as it's obviously a good album but it's just so squashed and undynamic. Compare his his CDs from throughout his career and hear the deterioration of sound quality with each release. But hey, loudness is king and those beats don't half bump over your tiny phone speakers through Spotify. Musically very good, sonically shit.

The samples on this album from the great like Nina Simone, Stevie Wonder and Sister Nancy are truly amazing.

It sounds like Jay-Z had a lot to get off his chest and thought he might as well put a beat under it. Lyrically it's thrilling, but musically this doesn't catch my attention for too long.
Not bad but not great
Great album.

I just wish this were mixed and mastered a little better.

His best since Black Album.
I really liked this. Never been big on Jay because he always seemed a bit full of himself, and since my impression was based on his features, he seemed inconsistent. But this album has a lot going for it. The beats are luxurious and soulful. Jay's voice is front and center, you're gonna hear every crack and break from the most confident man in hip hop. It's just the right amount of familiar and fresh. With that said, I think the album's second half is a little weak; Jay seems to run out of things to apologize and all the stuff about economics seems to be repeating what he's said earlier. The beats seem to have a bit less character and Jay kinda falls back on his braggadocio, but hey, he's not even bad at those things. They just aren't as interesting.

I mean, middle-of-the-road Jay-Z is still pretty okay.
All these terrible comments from people who know nothing about hip-hop. This is a great album that shines lyrically, sonically and thematically.
