A drastic change from Lesley Gore's 60s output in more ways than one. Besides her voice having matured into a cuttingly deep, yet soulful timbre, she becomes literally a singer-songwriter here. The songs here are much more introspective than the innocent teenybopper jams of hers from her commercial peak, but unlike those, every track here was penned by Gore herself. Some were her alone, including the album highlight "Mine," a candid glimpse into the affected soul of someone who, at the time, was just realizing she was homosexual and as such went from making more specific references to boys than any other singer (acknowledged openly with her third LP) to speaking of personal and romantic issues free of gender pronouns. It's too bad Lesley Gore didn't make a triumphant 70s comeback with this the way Frankie Valli, Neil Sedaka, Ricky Nelson, and even Perry Como could because this is a great album in the singer-songwriter genre, distinct for its time in its implicitly lesbian perspective.
