Rating metrics:
Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).

I didn't know what "anodyne" meant until I heard this song, and this album. And I'm not sure it really means what it means in this song. I think it's supposed to mean something like "not likely to provoke dissent or offense; inoffensive, often deliberately so, as in anodyne New Age music." But in this song I think Jay Farrar takes it to mean passive aggression, unspoken or barely spoken sentiments that are ultimately meant to cause harm. I think I witnessed some of this behavior when I saw these guys on tour in the spring of '94: a sense that they were barely tolerating each other, trying ostensibly not to cause offense, but doing so anyway through subtle acts of non-acknowledgement and exclusion.
