Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. An incredibly uplifting song, despite subject matter that verges on the melancholy: "I remember walking with her in town / Her hair was in the wind / I gave her my best kiss / She gave it back again / When I add up what I've left behind / I don't want to lose no more." When Tom Petty insists "we've gotta get to a higher place," backing it with a great twelve-string chord progression, that's absolutely a place I want to go.
