Screw it, I'm voting Shallow Grave. As amazing as Yerself Is Steam is, I just think Shallow Grave is a more reliable listen. I can be in any mood and enjoy it, plus it's good to hear someone so recent having such a clear Dylan influence.
Both artists have done far better work. But in this case I gotta go for Yerslef Is Steam by default. Shallow Grave was really grating (something I've found TMOE does on the odd tracks on his otherwise good albums - but it was the whole thing here beginning to end) and altogether unpleasant.
Listening to Yerself now, though it's going to be hard to beat anything by Tallest Man on Earth. I may have to revisit that album, all of their stuff has sort of blurred into just a collective discography for me. _________________
I feel like I'm missing something here (and maybe it's LSD), but Yerself was awful. Really, really bad. After checking through what was on Shallow Grave, it is clear that it wasn't their best album, but that still wins by a mile for me.
Then again I'm the kind of person who much preferred Garcia's work with Grisman than with Grateful Dead. _________________
