Eh, they're very different bands really. Pearl Jam came from a classic rock lineage, and as such their music always felt stodgier than Nirvana's, as though it was attempting to fulfill some overtly macho idea of "real rock". Nirvana came from a punk and alt. rock lineage, and their music always felt leaner and more vulnerable than Pearl Jam's. And much better too, obviously.

I barely ever listen to it anymore, but it will always be near the top of my list. It's a shame how overplayed half this album is because it takes away from how great it really is. I honestly wouldn't mind if I never heard Alive, Evenflow, Jeremy, or Black ever again, and they're all great songs. But personally I've overplayed the entire album (along with the rest of their discography)...I remember listening to Deep almost on a loop for several days once. I'll never get tired of listening to Release though.

Pearl Jam were pretty good in their own right. Black and Alive are best here.

Always liked this album, definitely my favorite Pearl Jam album. It's not crazy amazing, I'd put Nirvana's first two albums ahead of it, but I definitely like it. The guitar-work is fantastic, some of Mike McCready's best.
Lethal's absolutely right about the two bands differences though, Pearl Jam is much more classic rock focused, more guitar-oriented and all, whereas Nirvana is very much punk and alternative. _________________ Progressive Rock

Another uncool album, right?
To be honest grunge as a whole never did much for me. This one is OK, I guess, not terrible, but I fail to see why it is remembered as a masterpiece. I prefer Nirvana, but I don't like Nirvana that much either actually. Not sure why, it just doesn't excite me the way it's supposed to.

Love the album, love the band. It isn't my favorite album by them, but close to it. Have listened to it hundreds of times. Tons of amazing songs that still have timeless power when listened to today. It has a raw and murky mood that many bands after tried and failed to capture. Best song: Black

I preferred Pearl Jam to Nirvana when they both came out, but that's because I am more of a classic rock and roll guy. Ten is a great debut album and I still love PJ to this day. Best tracks: Release, Even Flow, Black, Jeremy.

Because it's more classic rock oriented, I always liked it more than any other grunge album.

In my top 10 of all time (Though it has gradually fallen from the top 3 to its current position of 6th). Amazing album that I love dearly. _________________
