Filosofem by Burzum

I'm starting to feel my mindset about this album change. I'm starting to think of it as one of the greatest albums ever made. Weird. But, really, it's just a awe-inspiring bolt of creative inspiration.

Filosofem is definitely awesome. Not trying to be rude in asking this, just curious, 'cause I started with Burzum as well, but have you listened to very much other lower production value black metal? I found Filosofem an awesome lightning rod to finally get my stubborn ass into metal, but over time, some of the deeper cuts I've discovered (and not so deep from the perspective of trve kvlt heads, but definitely obscure to your typical indie-loving teenager, which i was) have eclipsed it in quality even further.

Yeah this is definitely the first black metal, lo fi, dark ambient type black metal album I've gotten into. And it's one of about 5 black metal albums I've ever heard. And this is the one, similar to what you said, finally made me see the greatness that can exist in the genre. Definitely open for a few more albums to dig into.

I'd start with:

La Sanie Des Siècles - Panégyrique De La Dégénérescence by Peste Noire

Paysage d'Hiver by Paysage d'Hiver

and if you're feeling particularly adventurous, really like kind of murky production and such, some classics of the genre include:

I.N.R.I. by Sarcófago

Ritual by Master's Hammer

Transilvanian Hunger by Darkthrone (along with A Blaze in the Northern Sky and Under a Funeral Moon)

and a recent favorite of a lot of people i know online:

Murmuüre by Murmuüre

American Drift by Elysia Crampton

niiiiice lemme know what you think. have you heard her other material? if not, you're starting in the best place possible, in my opinion. :)

Actually I haven't heard anything else from Crampton. I liked it, didn't blow me away, but it was cool. The Lil Jon stuff at the end felt a little weird and out of place, but other than that, it was cool. I think a couple more listens will be beneficial.

Mercury I'd second all of these (sans Ritual, which is alright but not nearly to the quality of the others here imo).

Would also throw in these

Anno Domini by Tormentor

Dark Space III by Darkspace

Forgotten Legends by Drudkh

Live In Leipzig by Mayhem

Fallen Angel Of Doom by Blasphemy

and plenty more DBZcore BM ;)

just to clarify, the whole album utilizes crunk samples and structures, as does the majority of her body of work, so Lil Jon doesn't come out of nowhere, really. interviews might shed light on why she likes this as a source material if you're interested, but it's certainly not relevant or necessary if you're just trying to listen to the stuff.

you're really kind of an ass sometimes 😜

i like all of your recs, though i wouldn't really recommend most of them to someone just trying to get into the genre. i think the Peste Noire and Paysage d'Hiver picks are the best bridge from Burzum, and Ritual is probably the best starting point for someone who needs something a bit cleaner sounding and closer to a generally accepted more accessible genre of metal, that being thrash metal. still, all of them that i recognize are essential listening at some point in diving into BM, and I do really like your main list.

Liberty Belle & the Black Diamond Express by The Go-Betweens
