I listened to this album all the time two or three years ago, and it was my number three for a while. As Applerill said, it's inoffensive, but I feel like it gets unnecessary flak for that, since it is pop music at the end of the day. I think 'charming' is a better word, but still represent what I hate about Elbow - that at this point they're BBC Radio 2 fodder.
Starlings is a lovely intro and I love the soft to loud moments, and Mirrorball and Weather To Fly are still some of my all-time favourite songs for how purely listenable they are. Grounds For Divorce is the song they're famous for in England, and it's eye-rollingly overplayed at this point, but not nearly as much as 'One Day Like This', which was almost inescapable a few years back, and still is to a point.
If you enjoy some of the quirkier moments of the album, then Cast of Thousands and Asleep In The Back are much better, more experimental and darker in tone - they weren't made for you Mum, which current elbow unfortunately falls into the category of.
