Also, what is Elbow anyway? I know absolutely nothing about them, other than that they seem to be Aussie-porn in the music world.

One of my favourite albums ever - I don't get why there's so little love for it.

The moments when the jangling guitar breaks after the mellow starlings; the sweeping strings on mirrorball; the loud and punchy Grounds for Divorce - man it's to die for.

Weather to Fly really steals the show me though, such a beautiful melody so simply executed.
Then Loneliness of the Tower Crane Driver is so powerful it's almost cinematic; really paints the picture of a man hundreds of feet above the world feeling so isolated - such fantastic lyrics.

Granted the album dips a little after that - Some Riot is a little mediocre and The Fix, I feel, ruins the mood of the album being a little too quirky. But then you've got One Day Like This - which if you ignore all the popularity from the public, is actually a brilliant, uplifting song with a great second half that just continues to build.

Then finally there's Friends of Ours - when the piano kicks in it really hits me that it's the end of the album. Such a poignant piano line perfectly repeated until the final note.

I have great memories listening to this album too - listening to it early in the mornings in the summer, then listening to it repeatedly in the car on long trips. Great stuff.

I really urge people to listen to it if you haven't - there must be something for everyone.

They're a 5 piece band from Manchester England, not sure what band I'd associate them with most - perhaps Coldplay or Arcade Fire? Still not really close. They've been described as "Post Brit-Pop", so I'll go with that.

I have to listen to this soon, but I can't decide whether I should just to listen it for free or if I should get the physical album? Think

Of course you were in before me. 6:00am this thread started so I was getting ready for work. Now, I am at work.

Quickly typing before getting on with work.

Personally, Elbow is a significant band for the catalyst of my music taste and the song Mirrorball from this album was played by a string quartet and sung by a choir. A great moment in my life.

Seldom Seen Kid was one of my favourite albums when I initially joined and with my little music knowledge I had then, I believe it was one of the five best albums of the 00s (now just out of my top 10). Don't get me wrong, I still love listening to this album but other Elbow albums have been great. Asleep In The Back is a magnificent debut and Seldom Seen Kid made them known worldwide.

Songs like One Day Like This, Grounds For Divorce, The Fix and Mirrorball are amazing and highlight the influences of Radiohead and other British contemporaries. The appeal within Australia is not as huge as what Apperill might perceive. Many people laugh at me when I say that Elbow is a favourite band of mine. Not because they don't like them, but because they have never heard such a stupid name.

This album is the prime example of award success leading to exposure. The album is not groundbreaking, nor is it going to change music forever. But Seldom Seen Kid is still an album worth listening to, just to experience something of the modern Manchester scene.
