Fantastic album! I don't know if this has changed because I haven't been here in a while, but I always thought Elvis Costello was tragically underrated on this site. I maintain that he is one of the best songwriters in rock history. If you want to hear angsty well-crafted songs that rock, look no further than this album. Fantastic!

even at the height of my love for alternative rock music in general, i couldn't really get into Elvis Costello. there's one or two tracks across this and My Aim Is True that i like a decent amount, but i was rarely bothered to listen to either in full.

I think that part of the appreciation of what Costello was to music during this period is having been there during that time. You can listen to his first two albums today and think, yeah, that's okay...but when these were new, it was opening doors for kids to a lot of new possibilities. We had never heard things like "Watching The Detectives" or "Pump It Up" or "The Beat" or "Waiting For The End Of The World". We had never seen a dorky Buddy Holly type who could be so openly pissy, and at the same time so musical. The first two Costello albums are pure gold.
Also, on later CD issues of My Aim Is True, there's a sweet solo acoustic performance of "Lip Service". _________________ I'm leaning on the threshold

Elvis Costello has been climbing the ranks of my favourite artists for a while now, and this is one of my favourites of his- certainly out of his first 3 albums. I love the loose yet tight feel of the Attractions' playing and the melodies that Costello writes. His vocal performances are also great throughout- particularly love the performance on Pump It Up! I still need to delve into the lyrics, because they're great, but hard to take in all at once. Overall, it's a great album and an improvement over the debut mainly due to the Attractions more visceral playing.

Same here, I could never get into his music, apart from a few decent tracks. Not impressed by this album either. _________________ Always shouts out something obscene
