I think Peter Gabriel gets irritating starting with So (not that So is bad, but he's beginning the journey towards irritating). Other than that, I don't see much comparison between U2 and Gabriel.
Maybe more like U2 gets irritating in the way Sting gets irritating.
I think of U2 and Peter Gabriel as working in the same general musical terrain, though not necessarily stealing ideas from each other (although I suppose the case can be made that Peter Gabriel was doing it first). I think that, at the time U2 made The Unforgettable Fire, Gabriel was the more interesting artist, but U2 redeemed themselves with the truly outstanding The Joshua Tree.
I don't want to make it seem like I think U2 was ripping off Gabriel. Yes I am a huge Gabriel fan and am warming up to U2 but I think musically Gabriel had the ideas in his head for an arrangement and always the perfect ensemble to pull it off. U2 made their mark their own way which I completely respect, but I think sethmadsen is correct in the fact that Eno and Gabriel can be the more comparable duo. _________________ Attention all planets of the solar federation: We have assumed control.
