Like in Sabbath he has Iommi and Butler, Rainbow he has Ritchie, Cozy, etc.... |
And in Dio he had Vivian Campbell and Vinny Appice, both of whom were killer at what they do. I mean, I think Iommi and Blackmore are better guitarists than Campbell, though he's no slouch by any stretch and Appice is right up there with Butler and Cozy (though I think both are probably better, but not by leaps and bounds). |
I think Campbell was a killer guitarist but he never had the feel meets technical ability that Ritchie Blackmore had. And I just prefer Iommi's playing to a lot of guys. Drums wise, yeah Vinny was a good fit in that band but his playing has always bored me compared to Bill Ward and Cozy Powell. I just think the Dio band lacked musical personality, not ability. _________________ Attention all planets of the solar federation: We have assumed control.

That's actually been done. The Very Beast of Dio. Was gonna post the link but I couldn't find it. Maybe it's in the database.
Holy Diver is pretty good for what it is. Its 75/100 rating sounds about right. I think I slightly prefer The Last in Line but would probably give it the same rating, if I haven't already. They might make my top 100 metal albums. His best Rainbow and Sabbath albums were loads better. |
Well I thought that compilation was specifically for the band Dio. I was referring to everything Dio has been involved with (i.e. Dio, Black Sabbath, Rainbow, Elf) |
Yeah, I don't think that's been done. There's a good Sabbath compilation that I owned before the studio albums too though. Don't have it anymore. I lost use for the majority of compilations when I decided to just collect everything from bands I love.
Vivian Campbell was amazing too. I can't fault the band for liking the older stuff more. I think the songwriting is what brings it slightly down. Although he's always delt with magical and mythical subject matter, it's a little more cartoonish on his solo albums. Its the equivalent to a horror filmmaker like John Carpenter or Tobe Hooper switching to "Goosebumps" style kids scares.

Same. There is something about it that strikes me as unintentionally funny. It's OK to be corny, but when there's no sense of irony...meh.

For his solo material? Yeah. But for Dio-oriented albums there's quite a bit that I think would be better (including Sabbath's Heaven & Hell).

For the Dio solo band yes unless you want to find The Very Beast of Dio. A bunch of tracks on this album normally appear on his greatest hits collections.
EDIT: Gowi beat me by a couple seconds but this further reinstates that "Dio" is not the best work by Dio. Heaven & Hell is one of the best metal albums ever in my opinion. Seriously underrated on this site. _________________ Attention all planets of the solar federation: We have assumed control.

Yeah, Heaven & Hell is obviously great but I also think Rainbow's Rising and Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow are better. Black Sabbath's Mob Rules and Elf's self-titled are excellent too.
Also the "corny and self-aware but not IRONIC? hahaha no" sentiment needs to be thrown in the garbage.

I was disappointed when Dio left Sabbath, but this album is a pretty good consolation prize.
