Greatest Hits by Neil Young

NEIL YOUNG
GREATEST HITS
2004-REPRISE
VARIOUS PRODUCERS

1. Down By The River
2. Cowgirl In The Sand
3. Cinnamon Girl
4. Helpless
5. After The Gold Rush
6. Only Love Can Break Your Heart
7. Southern Man
8. Ohio
9. The Needle & The Damage Done
10. Old Man
11. Heart Of Gold
12. Like A Hurricane
13. Comes A Time
14. Hey Hey My My (Into The Black)
15. Rockin' In The Free World
16. Harvest Moon

On the packaging, Young states that songs were included based on record sales, airplay, and downloads. And it shows that Neil was definitely at his commercial peak in the 70's...14 of the 16 tracks are from 1969-79. This is a nice package if you don't want to get all of the early albums, but you want the hits...and you're too cheap to buy Decade.

However, the music here is simply great, and you should have it all. And even if you have the other albums, it's a good party CD. Really, even though it might be a little redundant, it's still Neil. And it's still great stuff.

Their Greatest Hits (1971-1975) by Eagles

EAGLES
THEIR GREATEST HITS 1971-75
1976-ELEKTRA
Produced By GLYN JOHNS & BILL SZYMCZYK

1. Take It Easy
2. Witchy Woman
3. Lyin' Eyes
4. Already Gone
5. Desperado
6. One Of These Nights
7. Tequila Sunrise
8. Take It To The Limit
9. Peaceful, Easy Feeling
10. Best Of My Love

Here's a fact. You know every song on this album. If you don't know them all by looking at the titles, then you'll know them when you hear them. And if you don't know them by hearing them, you are simply not from this planet. One of the more solid greatest hits packages ever released, this album came out at the same time as Hotel California, making the Eagles megastars overnight...not that they weren't already doing well.

The albums that these 10 tracks come from are not the best you'll find. But this is one of those rare, perfect collections. One of the best greatest hits packages ever released. If you don't have it, then why the hell not? It's already in your brain...you might as well be able to hear it outside of your own head.

Elephant by The White Stripes

THE WHITE STRIPES
ELEPHANT
2002-THIRD MAN
Produced By JACK WHITE

1. Seven Nation Army
2. Black Math
3. There's No Home For You Here
4. I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself
5. In The Cold, Cold Night
6. I Want To Be The Boy To Warm Your Mother's Heart
7. You've Got Her In Your Pocket
8. Ball And Biscuit
9. The Hardest Button To Button
10. Little Acorns
11. Hypnotize
12. The Air Near My Fingers
13. Girl, You Have No Faith In Medicine
14. Well It's True That We Love One Another

I'm not really quite sure what I was thinking in 2002, but I was surely not listening to what I should have been. This includes Elephant by The White Stripes, a split up couple pretending to be brother and sister all dressed in blood red and white and tearing up the music world with the biggest sounding two man band you've ever seen. Elephant leads off with the stunning "Seven Nation Army" and never slows down.

Jack White is a fine songwriter and frontman, with a rare presence that shines through on record. Elephant is a great album, and if you haven't discovered the Whites yet, this is the place to start. You won't be disappointed.

The Best Of The Alan Parsons Project by The Alan Parsons Project

THE ALAN PARSONS PROJECT
THE BEST OF THE ALAN PARSONS PROJECT
1983-ARISTA
Produced By ALAN PARSONS

1. I Wouldn't Want To Be Like You
2. Eye In The Sky
3. Games People Play
4. Time
5. Pyramania
6. You Don't Believe
7. Lucifer
8. Psychobabble
9. Damned If I Do
10. Don't Let It Show
11. Can't Take It With You
12. Old And Wise

Ever have one of those moments where you remember an artist you listened to when you were a teenager and think, "Man! I'd love to hear that stuff again! How come I haven't ran into it for so long!"? Then you go out and buy an album like The Best Of The Alan Parsons Project, and you hear how awesome "I Wouldn't Want To Be Like You" sounds. Then you realize just how terrible "Games People Play" and "Eye In The Sky" sound (for me, I'm oh so thankful that my cd player actually refused to get past the 1:30 mark of "Pyramania").

Oh, there's enough good stuff here to remind you why this producer was so cool for a minute in the late 70's ("Lucifer", "Damned If I Do"), but also enough to remember why you sold your Parsons albums in the 80's and never got around to replacing them. A fun nostalgic trip every couple of years...but that's about it.

Desireless by Eagle Eye Cherry

EAGLE EYE CHERRY
DESIRELESS
1998-WORK
VARIOUS PRODUCERS

1. Save Tonight
2. Indecision
3. Comatose (In The Arms Of Slumber)
4. Worried Eyes
5. Rainbow Wings
6. Falling In Love Again
7. Conversation
8. When Mermaids Cry
9. Shooting Up In Vain
10. Permanent Tears
11. Death Defied By Will
12. Desireless

Jazz trumpeter Don Cherry is a pretty forgotten musician, to be sure. Even more forgotten, though, is his stepdaughter, Neneh Cherry, who had a brief run of success with "Buffalo Stance". But the family title actually goes to Neneh's brother, Eagle Eye and his one hit "Save Tonight" from Desireless. And it's a shame that Eagle Eye never was heard much beyond that song, because this really is a pretty good record.

His sound will remind you of John Butler, his singing cool and clear, and his songs at the top of his game. Cherry not only makes "Save Tonight" sound great, but also "Shooting Up In Vain", "Death Defied By Will", and "Indecision". Eagle Eye certainly did deserve better than the lack of following he got and the shortness of his career. But you can still find Desireless and discover his gem of an album for yourself. Nicely done!

House Of Love by Amy Grant

AMY GRANT
HOUSE OF LOVE
1994-A&M
Produced By KEITH THOMAS & MICHAEL OMARTIAN

1. Lucky One
2. Say You'll Be Mine
3. Whatever It Takes
4. House Of Love
5. The Power
6. Oh How The Years Go By
7. Big Yellow Taxi
8. Helping Hand
9. Love Has A Hold on Me
10. Our Love
11. Children Of The World

The last time I heard House Of Love before today, it didn't seem as...awful. But it really has not aged well at all, and has actually become more of an annoying and empty pop album as the years have gone by. "Lucky One" lets you know right away that you're in for a tough listen...it's all synths and happy go skippy poppiness that's sure to bring on a cavity of two. And the rest is much of the same. Not even the better tracks, "The Power" and a straight on cover of the Joni Mitchell classic "Big Yellow Taxi" (which IS better than the mess Counting Crows made of it years later) can do much of a redemption job.

This is her 9th album, and her second album mixing modern pop with a Christian message...not a straight Christian album. Grant does deserve kudos for stepping (slowly) away from the genre that she owned for years, and she did actually end up making better music than this. (To this day...all of her albums reach at least #2 on the Christian charts.) But wow. This is really not good at all. More of a transitional album at best. It has some nice moments, but that's about it.

Axis: Bold As Love by The Jimi Hendrix Experience

THE JIMI HENDRIX EXPERIENCE
AXIS: BOLD AS LOVE
1967-EXPERIENCE HENDRIX
Produced By CHAS CHANDLER

1. EXP
2. Up From The Skies
3. Spanish Castle Magic
4. Wait Until Tomorrow
5. Ain't No Telling
6. Little Wing
7. If 6 Was 9
8. You Got Me Floatin'
9. Castles Made Of Sand
10. She's So Fine
11. One Rainy Wish
12. Little Miss Lover
13. Bold As Love

The Jimi Hendrix Experience had the greatest 3 album career in history. Axis: Bold As Love is the 2nd album, and shows simply why Hendrix was and still is considered one of rock's greatest artists. The album contains the absolute classic "Spanish Castle Magic", "Little Wing". "Castles Made Of Sand", "If 6 Was 9", and, hell, almost everything else. Not even the record's two blemishes, "EXP" (a borderline stupid radio interview with an alien), and "She's So Fine", which was written and sung by bassist Noel Redding, can reduce how great Hendrix and this album were. And are.

The first three albums are really a stunning collection in their own right. Get them all, and know that you have 3 of the greatest rock albums ever made. Ever.

Against The Stars by The Dambuilders

THE DAMBUILDERS
AGAINST THE STARS
1997-EASTWEST
Produced by ERIC MASUNAGA

1. Digitize
2. Break Up With Your Boyfriend
3. Burn This Bridge
4. Herstory
5. You Might Want Me Around
6. You'll Never Know
7. Itch It
8. Discopolis
9. Luster
10. I Was Wrong
11. On The Slide
12. Seek And Destroy
13. Wished On The Wrong Star

The Dambuilders, from Hawaii of all places, finally found the perfect mix between their big sound, their great songs, and the production it all needed to pull everything together on Against The Stars. Much better than the earlier entry here (Ruby Red), this album is loaded with heavy gems: "Break Up With Your Boyfriend" is power pop perfection, and the chorus on "Itch It" is as good as it gets.

There's also an experimental side: "Luster" is a dancefloor trance that sticks in your head. Joan Wasser and Dave Derby trade vocals throughout the album, and the guitars are heavier than on any other Dambuilders release. This is the album to have from this band. Virtual unknowns who should have been a big thing.

File Under Easy Listening by Sugar

SUGAR
FILE UNDER: EASY LISTENING
1994-RYKO
Produced By BOB MOULD

1. Gift
2. Company Book
3. Your Favorite Thing
4. What You Want It To Be
5. Gee Angel
6. Panama City Motel
7. Can't Help You Anymore
8. Granny Cool
9. Believe What You're Saying
10. Explode And Make Up

After the demise of Husker Du, Bob Mould tried his hand at a brief solo career, then came back with another loud trio. Sugar was very different from Husker Du, though, in that the band was loaded with great melodies. And even though Mould wouldn't know a hit single if it bit him in the ass (not that it's a bad thing in this case), he does make a case here for his band being somewhat unjustly ignored. Because Sugar, and in particular this album, are loaded with songs that could have made them a much bigger name than they ever were.

The band was short lived...they made two full albums (this was the 2nd), and EP, split, and then released a posthumous album. But people in the know get how great this band can sound. A group well worth discovering.
