Listening to that Donovan album right now for the first time. It's solid! Only in track 2 tbh, but man! I see why you mentioned Love. "Mad John's Escape" sounds like a Love song thru and thru, specifically like a less heavy outtake from "Forever Changes". _________________ -Ryan

Awesome! ๐
Yeah, those first ten tracks are pretty much instantly lovable. The second half takes a few more spins to click.
How far did you get before you fell asleep? ๐
Let me know what you thought of the rest! Is this your first Donovan album?
Peace!

These are mantra, and as u know they almost repeat the same line...forever lol
My favorite track is the #2, I think it's the most delicate and gentle song I have ever heard
Devi Prayer
This sounds great, pa! I found it on Spotify so I will listen to it soon & let know what I think. ๐
I've tried many times to formalize a mantra into my life without success so far. Any tips? I'll keep trying!
Faith is not something you can just turn on like a switch. At least not for me. Way too much schooling and thinking knocked it out of me years ago. But faith is real. And it has enormous, even miraculous, power. If you can tap into it. Judee Sill know this. She knows the power of faith and trust in something bigger than herself. And it comes pouring out of her songs. Her voice. Judee knows the way. Because her faith is pure and simple. Like a childโs.
Sometimes in your life you simply need faith. When the waters rise up so high that they become a river and you can no longer just wade through on will power and perseverance. On logic & intellect. When you have to let go, surrender and just let the current take you. Trusting that it will get you to the other shore. The other side. Thatโs when you need faith to guide you. And Judee Sill and this lovely, honest record can take you there. It can be your raft. If you let it.
Grade: A+. This is folk rock with just the right amount of cosmic country rock to give the songs some heft and ballast so that they stick to your bones and nourish you. The songs are beautiful and her purity of spirit shines though. Itโs quite different from any other 70s folk rock to my ears so it took literally multiple tries for this one to click. But like a lot of other albums that take some time to assimilate, when it does, it quickly becomes one of your faves. Iโll be tapping into this and Judeeโs faith frequently to guide me on my journey to the other shore. And this swims all the way to number five.

Like all the best goth albums, this really isnโt a goth album. Itโs way more than that. But itโs got a gothic heart at itโs core. The heart of a lonely, immortal vampire who has had to endure over and over again the death of his lovers as even his power can only sustain them for so long. Some last two hundred years. Some last fifty. But eventually they all succumb. To death. As he lives on. His lament for these lost loves and their faded beauty fills this album. Eulogies for all the loves that he still holds dear in his heart. Each one of them. He tries desperately to fill these memories with the beauty & romance & gallantry of their fond years together. But, the memories are all bittersweet. Painted blue and tainted with death and decay. The drums plod like a weary pilgrimage that has been going on far too long with still miles to go. For that is how his life feels now. And endless mournful journey. Too brokenhearted and crushed to find a new love yet his life continues to go on. Forever. And he wonders how much longer he can endure this pilgrimage of tears.
Grade: A+. Simply one of the best gothic albums of all time. While not quite at Pornography's or Closer's or even Siouxsieโs Kaleidoscope level, itโs pretty damn close. And this is easily Durutti Columnโs best stuff. Itโs far, far better than their more well know debut, The Return Of the Durutti Column. And it really is ripe for discovery for fans of dark 80s college rock. It's been buried far too long. And it trudges along on its trail of tears all the way to number four.

2. Mum - Finally We Are No One
3. Townes Van Zandt - Townes Van Zandt
4. The Durutti Column - Another Setting
5. Harold Budd/Brian Eno - The Pearl
6. Judee Sill - Judee Sill
6. Bonnie "Prince" Billie - The Letting Go
7. John Phillips - John, The Wolf King of L.A.
8. The Fun Years - One Quarter Descent
9. Virginia Astley - From Gardens Where We Feel Secure
10. Yo La Tengo - And Then Nothing Turned Itself Inside-Out

We can can reconvene in a about a week here and share our thoughts. Pretty sure You'll dig it. I took a look at your 80s chart & it just seems right up you alley. You can tell that they're a big fan of Joy Division's drumming style and Martin Hannit's production. They were label mates on Factory records so it's not surprising. And the guitar work is simply fantastic! Plus, the immoratal LadyG is a big fan so enough said!! ๐
