I really feel Newbury's run of albums from Looks Like Rain (1969), to this album 'Frisco Mabel Joy (1971), to Heaven Help The Child (1973) is perhaps the most stunningly beautiful and pristine 3 album run of that era. Definitely up there. Challenged by similar runs and perhaps longer runs by some of his master songwriter peers such as Joni (Clouds, Ladies of the Canyon, Blue) or Neil Young (Everybody Knows..., After the Goldrush, Harvest, ditch trilogy), or even the insane run of strange experimentation guys like Nilsson and Buckley were pulling off at that time. Hell! Leonard Cohen didn't miss a beat between 67-74. That's not even mentioning the magic of Stevie or Mayfield or or or of that same era...
But still, even with all that said, there is something magical about these Mickey Newbury albums. He used the studio so absolutely brilliantly. The way these country/folk albums are recorded is just so forward thinking. I feel like I am transported into Mickey Newbury's mind with the way the strings and choirs and all these little gloomy details float in and out. Its, again, magic. _________________ -Ryan
so far 1971 singer/songwriter has been hity after hit...its kinda driving me crazy. am i becoming easier to please or is the quality of these albums just that much greater? IDK. all i know is I am loving this album to bits. also armchair boogie, frisco mabel joy, tapestry, patchwork, if i could only remember my name, one year, in search of a song, basically all these albums i've been spinning the last 4 or 5 days have been fabulous. nalmost no duds. _________________ -Ryan
