One of my favourite Smiths albums with some great songs and witty lyrics. I even bought a new Vinyl LP recently because the original got lost on the journey through my life.
Favorite tracks:
The Queen is Dead
Cemetry Gates
Bigmouth Strikes Again
The Boy With The Thorn in his Side
There I A Light That Never Goes Out
Some Girls Are Bigger Than Others
But it's a mixed bag because I don't really like "Vicar In A Tutu" and a lot of the A-Side tracks.
The 2017 Deluxe Edition has two extra CDs with demos and live versions. But I think the live performances on "Rank" are better and the only preferred demo track is "Some Girls Are Bigger Than Others".
I used to think The Smiths are way overhyped. I still think they are somewhat overrated but this is an absolute masterpiece.
There is just so much energy and beauty in the music, esp. the guitar playing of Johnny Marr is the stuff of genius.
Fav tracks:
1. There I A Light That Never Goes Out
2. Bigmouth Strikes Again
3. Some Girls Are Bigger Than Others
4. The Boy With The Thorn in his Side _________________ All time
I can see how some people got discouraged by the somehow droning voice, but in the whole it’s so focused and graceful that it compensates this (major) flaw
