Caution by Mariah Carey
I have ridden for much more uneven, unfocused, and unnecessary Mariah albums than this in the recent past (the "inconsistent" ...Elusive Chanteuse, the "too in thrall to contemporary trends" E=MC², the "boring" ...Imperfect Angel, all of which I thoroughly enjoyed) that I'm aware I may just be suffering from a big ol' case of confirmation bias when I say this is one of the albums of the year - concise, sexy, full of memorable songs and tasteful production that nods to the mid-'90s without devolving into retrofetishism - but even I am surprised at just how great a Mariah Carey album actually sounds in actual 2018. Her voice isn't what it was, but those pipes often led to a surplus of overwrought balladry that tended to weigh down her earlier albums; I generally much prefer her funner, hip-hop flavoured post-Butterfly work, and I think Caution is quite probably her best (and most definitely most consistent) yet.
