The OTHER Honeybear

Everyone knows that Father John Misty's I love You ,Honeybear is considered one of the best singer-songwriter albums of 2010s. What you may not know is that this ...

Queen Of Denmark by John Grant

... sounds eerily similar in a lot of aspects and just as good. Only my first time hearing this, but damn this shit is good. Father John Misty has a lot of explaining to do or perhaps his album is simply a homage to this LP. ๐Ÿค”

edit: Hmmm... This has a pretty high rank on BEA. So maybe I'm the only loser who doesn't know how fabulous this album is. lol. Must be more of a homage than an outright theft of style & tone than i'm guessing.

Crooks And Lovers by Mount Kimbie

By 2010, dubstep was at something of a crossroads. The crowds it had brought together in its original form - spacious, sinister garage with all-encompassing sub-bass - had begun to splinter off, attending more niche raves that catered to their particular tastes. Grime was beginning to make the comeback that is still currently in full swing, the bros went in search of ever more abrasive chainsaw synths and fatter drops, and the more chilled out amongst us had gone off in search of a housier, techier take on UK garage, performed by the likes of Ramadanman and Untold and maybe even Joker, and informed by Four Tet and Todd Edwards and MJ Cole. That last section is where the likes of James Blake and his live backing band of the time - Mount Kimbie - roughly fitted in. Except that's somewhat unfair. On their debut - and still best (by miles) - LP, Kimbie carved out a series of airy, syncopated, acoustic guitar-sampling, glitchy jazzstep that was perfect for the post-rave chill-out, with its raindrop garage beats, warm organ tones, and tasteful patchwork vocal samples creating a comforting cloud of sounds just distant enough that they could be danced to joyously by a living room full of ketamine-fuelled mates without waking the neighbours. What surprises me most, then, about Crooks & Lovers is just how well it still holds up eight years on, despite very obviously being linked to hyperspecific memories of a very particular time and place. Its organic, patient nature still feels like a tonic to our 24-hour world, like a welcome hand on a shoulder wordlessly assuring that everything will be OK, almost (but, crucially, not quite) to the point of being twee. It is where the natural meets the mechanical in beautiful, human synthesis, and it deserves to be held in far higher esteem.

Man, I wish I had the time to give these elaborate but brief descriptors for the albums I love. But he was on the money for this album. Because this was an excellent album. There was one track on this where compared to the others felt a bit lacking but was still a good song. So my grade for this is a 90 as of now. And I say that since I am curious of there other work that came out this decade and future stuff beyond might wow me more than this. But by how for this year, I've been getting a somewhat dense competition for albums. Also as of this moment, I'm tackling another 2010 album called Cosmogramma.

You know, some point I'll be consistent with getting album covers being large. But as of now.

Finally got another album from 2010 under my belt. Which whoever decided to have this become a collaborative effort, they need a pat on the back. In the past two days, I was able to get 8 albums done. I might get ten done.

But lets really talk about Cosmogramma. To be honest, this is Flying Lotus's most ambitious album to date. For 2010, this feels otherworldly even after being almost 10 years old at this point. But is this my favorite album from him? Well no. To me, Los Angeles was better. That album for the vibe and aesthetic were more otherworldly to me. While this album is ambitious with its organic instrumentation, to me feels otherworldly compared to some of the picks I have got to and others I will fine later.

However, if anyone hasn't heard this album please listen to this. Though this is a 85. As this goes on, this competition will make me reevaluate albums and ranking them.

Maybe the best thing is that I start with my top 5 (out of a total of of a year that I don't really consider to be the best in music but which nevertheless includes a lot of gems:

1.

Sweet Bird Of Youth by The Rock*A*Teens
A few days ago I tried to get people warmed up on this band which I think is completely underrated. This best album of theirs made it to the number one spot in my chart of the year. Only to show that I don't consider this year to be a top year: this album barely makes it to the my overall top 250.

2.

More Light by J Mascis + The Fog
What can I say? I'm a J Mascis fan.

3.

Lightbulb Sun by Porcupine Tree
As some of you might have noticed, I'm not a big prog fan and it took me a while before I started to appreciate John Wilson/Porcupine Tree and this is one of their best especially because of the great Shesmovedon.

4.

Brave New World by Iron Maiden
Guilty Pleasure: there's very few albums of Iron Maiden I don't like and this might not be considered one of their best, it still rocks although it doesn't contain one of these epic standouts other Maiden albums have.

5.

Mass Romantic by The New Pornographers
Very good Vancouver powerpop: guitars and keyboards.

I'm sure I can recommend some other albums in my list but will think of that as we move along. Amongst the other lists, there are some very interesting recs here I certainly would like to find out about.

Dihansse, though 2000 does have a lot of dope albums from any genre you can think of, this is for the year 2010. I was about to listen to these albums and realized these picks were from 2000.

Well I donโ€™t think Iโ€™ve ever heard of it, so it looks like I know exactly what Iโ€™ll be listening to today.

Genetic is a god tier track. But more importantly, this is some top 10 material right here. I'm not done yet and I feel like this is some divine intervention type shit. Hope the second half is as good.

I finally finished this up. And this is top 10 for 2010. Hell top 5 for 2010. Like I could see myself 5 years from now giving this a 100. Hell it comes so close. The album can taste it. But there are a few little things that hold it back. Mainly, I wished this was longer. Like the high these tracks ooze out is a divine intervention. I wanted it to last. And when they were over, I wanted to go back. Genetic might be the track of the year for 2010.
If there was a descriptor for this album, it would be drifting through space within a machine that produces dreams.
Grade:95 but realistically with a few more listens, it will be a 100.

After a false start here is my first contribution.
To me the '00 decade was not the best decade in music while the '10 decade shows a real improvement. However this decade is not yet starting in 2010 but only in 2011 which is proven by the fact that my first album of 2010 is barely in my top 500 overall.

Nevertheless I currently have 67 albums in my 2010 year chart of which 9 Belgian albums which must be a record. Even my number one is a Belgian album I suppose nobody of you have heard about.
This is my current top 5 which needs a revision:

1.

Rising Sun, Setting Sun by Mintzkov
Like I said a Belgian album from a band which was formerly named as Mintzkov Luna and then changed its name into Mintzkov. In fact it is fairly regular power-rock but effective. If you can find it, the standouts are The 25th Hour and Finders Keepers

2.

Our Cubehouse Still Rocks by Boston Spaceships
This is another side project of GBV's Robert Pollard.

3.

The Suburbs by Arcade Fire
Not as good as Funeral but still a very good one and their second best.

4.

II by The White Wires
garage punk with a lot of fuzz

5.

Kudos by Surf City
Very good album of this Kiwi VU inspired band.

I'm sure I can recommend some other albums but will come back on that later. From my side I'm certainly gonna find out about some of the recs already mentioned...
