Rating metrics:
Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)
This album is rated in the top 3% of all albums on BestEverAlbums.com. This album has a Bayesian average rating of 77.1/100, a mean average of 76.3/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 77.4/100. The standard deviation for this album is 15.3.

Top record beauty and pain throughout with moments of humour. Dreams go to die is luscious, Sigourney weaver just wonderful. ' I think I am on Jupiter, the one that looks like rainbow sherbet'
Funny, tuneful and brutally-honest-at-times indie folk, John Grant is like Father John Misty if Misty wasn't so damn lyrically obscure and musically all-over-the-place. I also hear an ear for Pink Floyd now-and-then with his cinematic instrumental touches on a fine debut album backed by Midlake.
John Grant's debut solo album is one of the best albums of the last ten years. Queen of Denmark, is typical Grant, great music and some fantastically hilarious lyrics, especially the line about Winona Ryder not getting the accent right. A superb album from an artist who still has a lot to offer.
Some of the strangest, funniest, cleverest lyrics on any album I've heard. Not as dark and moody at Pale Green Ghosts, but great album all the same.
1976 and heartbroken. Classic songwriting of the sort not seen since Rufus Wainwright's 'Want', the quality here is so good that John Grant's debut would be critically acclaimed in any decade since the 1960s. Love is hell, other people are hell, and over and over again. Massaging a bruise until it is a rhapsody in purple, red, and blue. Is this album excellent? Yes.
Classic album - a real return to great songwriting and insightful lyrics. Title track is the standout, but I really like Outer Space and Sigourney Weaver as well.
Really strong songwriting with lots of emotion and plenty of wit. My biggest worry when listening to this album is how much I like Chicken Bones but at the same time think it sounds very similar to Nickelback's Rockstar but lines like "I feel just like Sigourney Weaver when she had to kill those aliens and one guy tried to get them back to the earth and she couldn't believe her ears" and "You tell me that my life is based upon a lie, I casually mentioned that I pissed in your coffee" soon blow those worries away.
One of the best albums of 2010. Hope I get a chance to see John Grant and Midlake live.
