I think the reason I skipped over this when I went through much of Eno's discography about 5 years ago was that I found some of the lyrics disturbing. Luckily I have a stronger stomach and/or better capacities for lyrical interpretation now, because much of this album is near-transcendent (tracks 1, 6, 9 & 10). It's very much a grab bag of musical styles and sonic ideas, and is never dull. However, not everything hits the mark, and the zaniness sometimes detracts. I think it could be a grower, and I'm starting it at a high 3.5/5.

This is impossibly beautiful music, which sounds like natural forces that have been culled from the realm of gentle spirits and transformed into sound. I was interested in trying to isolate some of Melnyk's technique, because there are elements that are at odds with one another, and yet the work as a whole remains consonant. He's playing in a different meter with each hand, and maybe a different tempo, as well. He's perpetually modulating with each hand independently, and at different rates, yet each hand seems to take a turn as the one which is modulating more rapidly. It's a cool technique, because what you get is endless alternation between harmonic dissonance and consonance, endless tension and release. His music has a graceful and simply stated beauty, but the underlying theory and technique sounds as if it's anything but.

A nice and spacey New Age tape that fills my headspace with good thoughts. Composed on a synthesizer system that he made himself, Mr. Steve McLinn is one of those independent artists who just seems like a good guy who wants to make music for the betterment of people.
According to his website, this album was, "developed in collaboration with medical doctors and psychologists to be used to set up an ambient atmosphere for relaxation, guided imagery, hypnosis, and sleep and pain therapy. It has been used successfully in hospitals and clinics around the world for hypertension and other stress related disorders."

This didn't really provoke much of a reaction in me, either good or bad. The premise and the use of B movie samples is cool, and the production and beats are a bit different than a lot of hip hop I've heard from it's time, but really this is not from my musical world so I don't fell qualified to give any sort of judgement on it's quality - just whether I enjoyed it or not - and it passed the time well enough without doing anything more. I'm sure this would be great for fans of MF Doom and his ilk though. 6.5/10, and 31/36 for 2003.

Some quite excellent stuff. You could describe this as neoclassical breakcore, but in all honesty there's so much more to this record. Especially with longer songs like Hajnal and Kétsarkú Mozgalom which were my favourites. They go from violin led breakcore rave to jazz-inspired piano sections to laid back melodies and back to breakcore. I was also impressed with the shorter songs, interludes of sorts, which were not as diverse and crazy as the longer cuts but were just as cool. A very solid 9/10

I don't think this is the first work I've listened to that uses Schoenberg's 12-tone technique, but it's the first where I've paid particular attention to that aspect of it. It lends the music an ethereal quality, or translucent maybe, given that it lacks the color of diatonic music. This work was written amidst war and is intended as a lamentation, but I can't say that I'm given to that interpretation based on tone alone. I assume the lyrics suggest Krenek's intentions, but they're lost behind a language barrier, and what I'm left with is cosmic scenery painted by some warped, Ambrosian-esque plainchant. Either way, this is incredibly beautiful music. But it was interesting to see some of the challenges presented by the 12-tone technique. Certain compositional elements are unavailable, and the composer has to make careful use of other elements, such as the dynamics in the piece; which are excellent here, if fairly subtle.

With a title like that this was definitely one of the albums I was interested in hearing from this list, but this is no Tubthumping, Dropkick Murphys, Aussie pub rock, music for a knees up, or even The Pogues. This is one person drinking a bottle to himself all alone all night type drinking songs. Sombre, morose, melancholic, and evocative contemporary folk. Very effective in creating a mood and setting a scene. The last song was quite impressive and by progressing from the acousticness of the whole album up to that point to some electronic drum and bass madness for me bought to mind that end of a drinking session when everything is blurry, confusing, your head is spinning, and you're about to pass out. Listening to this album was a worthwhile experience. 7.5/10 and 27/36 for 2005.

This album plays like a sleepytime dream log, wandering from the serenely beautiful, to the bizarre, and to the grotesque. The title track, which is especially lovely, I'd rate five stars; and the next two aren't that far behind. "Airhead", though. I think they could have left that one off and no one would miss it. I think "Deep Sky" might be the first time I've ever heard autotune (it could be a talkbox or something else, I don't know) used in an experimental pop song, but that seems improbable. Still, I wouldn't have expected to hear it used for its textural value, and it works nicely. I haven't listened to much from Japan, but I knew there would be all sorts of little gems like this, and this album should serve as a gateway to finding more.

Prior to this, I've listened to Feels and Merriweather Post, and while MVP had some great songs, it was quite inconsistent unlike Feels which was fantastic all the way through. Sung Tongs is waaaay more abstract than either of those, and it's very appealing sonically. Songwriting wise it's much worse than either MVP or Feels though. The best example for that is Visiting Friends which starts really interesting but just drags for 12 minutes without going anywhere. I'm sure it's a grower, and I haven't been able to pick up every nuance of this very unique record in just 2 listens, so I'll cut it some slack with a decent 70/100.
