It's too bad Chance stopped pioneering psychedelic hip-hop...I think he was really onto something with this tape. |
Agreed, I'd love to see some more psychedelic hip-hop. I recommend Kaytranada if you haven't taken a look at that.
But I'd love to see Chance get back to this style on his next album. This was great and I loved Coloring Book as well. _________________ 51 Washington, D.C. albums!

This really was excellent, before his rapid descent into Doritos-sponsored, maximalist pseudo-gospel and relentless, almost offensively misplaced positivity - instead of being the supposed tonic to rap's prevailing nihilism that his fans claim, he is instead just overly preachy (in the literal sense) and increasingly divorced from reality. Also, in spite of this turn towards a more sunny disposition, his rapping has actually become less fun and carefree, and is now rather unnatural and cliche-ridden. _________________ 2021 in full effect. Of course I would as well...however I have little to no faith he will ever return to this style. It's been 7 years and the Chance that made Acid Rap is a different man now. Part of me wants to look at him getting off psychedelics for the main reason of his recent lack of creativity.... but I hate to be someone who wants somebody who is seemingly happier off drugs to get back on drugs. However I do believe drugs, especially psychedelics, are a large factor in the creation of so many classic and great albums throughout history.
Once Chance started working with Kanye it was almost like he put his innovation on hold to appeal to the sound Kanye wanted wanted to go within his own career. Although I don't think Coloring Book was bad, it was disappointing to me that he became a follower in the industry instead of remaining a pioneer. Creating party tracks with fad trap artists was not the direction I expected him to go after his first two mixtapes. Not to mention not a single part of Coloring Book was as good as Ultralight Beam and his verse on that track. I guess after Coloring Book I had hoped that since he had officially made it big and had an opportunity to make an album with Kanye, that Coloring Book was just a pit-stop for him before returning to his unique sound that turned so many heads prior. However this clearly was not the case. I'm not sure how you go from songwriting on tracks like Acid Rain to whatever the hell he was doing on The Big Day, and expect your fan-base to appreciate your evolution as an artist. Not that he necessarily has to care, but still.
Again, I just think the man who made Acid Rap has grown up and changed so much that unfortunately his sound reverting back to that of Acid Rap is unlikely. I personally don't even have much faith he will create another project I enjoy again sadly. _________________ Griselda, by Fashion Rebels

Chance never seriously took psychedelics. Acid does not sound like this. _________________ 2021 in full effect. Come drop me some recs. Y'all know what I like.

Yeah, there really isn't anything psychedelic about this. It's a blast though.
I don't think Chance will ever release something this good again, but at least we have it.

Agreed, however you never know. I think the chances of him putting out another great album are incredibly slim, but possible.

That is an interesting point. I don't disagree, I think Coloring Book may have been better without Kanye involved. Though I do feel that Kanye sometimes had the gold touch, particularly as a producer.

I respectfully disagree with this.
Maybe I'm the only one here who liked Coloring Book, but I thought it was a logical progression from Acid Rap. _________________ 51 Washington, D.C. albums!
