“Down The Road I Go” and (in particular) “Remember” are great. The rest of the songs are fairly pedestrian, but the album never bottoms out and overall this is a strong effort to be self-released by a regional band. And holy shit, is that rhythm section muscular.

New Order are great, but I have always thought they tended to have moments of blandness amongst their times of brilliance. This album suffers from having too much of that blandness and no moments of briliiance, although most of the songs are good despite that. And yes All The Way is, to give them the benefit of the doubt, a nice little nod to The Cure by writing a song just like Just Like Heaven. 7.5/10, and 20/26 for 1989.

Now this is what I'm talking about. This is the first varied and dynamic techno album I've heard from this list. I can listen to this one anytime, because it's immediately engaging. I'll definitely have to check out some other albums of his, and I hope that some of the other albums on the list are of this caliber. Shades of Drexciya and other classics are what I heard.

Well this is a unique album if I've ever heard one. It sounds like a combination of King Crimson, Mr. Bungle and Devin Townsend, maybe a bit more on the avant-garde metal side. With loads of weird, often home made instruments and unusual song structures, this has at the very least piqued my curiosity. Their Wikipedia page is a short, but good read. I would like to delve deeper into the band's history and also live performances, it sounds like they were insane. "... puppet shows, pseudo-scientific scholarly presentations, and performances by members of the Butoh group inkBoat." There's also this section about bands who've influenced Sleepytime Gorilla Museum: "Henry Cow, Swans, Einstürzende Neubauten, King Crimson, Mayhem, Bauhaus, The Art Bears, Igor Stravinsky, Thinking Plague, and Univers Zéro". The record itself is pretty good most of the time, and I love hearing so many unusual sounds and styles incorporated in already complex prog/avant-garde songs. From industrial to folk and everything in between. There's even a part on the song Bring Back The Apocalypse that sounds like some experimental IDM. I have to say that after 2 listens I've barely scratched the surface, but it did manage to excite me a lot. We'll see if it's just interesting experimentation, or if the songs actually stick with me. 8.5/10

Slightly above average Acid Techno frrom last year. Seems he is a relatively new artist, so this release shows some potential to me. Hopefully this artist continues to grow in the future. The more dreamy synths that wash over the techno beats are when it's at it's best. I also think the last track should be called "Pete Standing Alone Remix" because it sounds way too close to the Boards of Canada song. I'm sure it has to be a slightly sped up sample.

I remember Strawberry Switchblade appearing on the scene with a little bit of hype at the time, and as a teenager just getting into alternative music I dismissed them....seemed more Madonna/CyndI Lauper rather than The Cure/Echo & The Bunnymen...and I was probably right to do so then. But now I can appreciate it much more than I would have then. I was pleasantly surprised listening to this. It is a bit dance pop but it feels a lot more authentic, with a twee dream pop vibe, and there is a resigned, almost depressing tone to it that sets it apart. Plus there is some interesting, and probably unusual at the time, musical things happening on this album, and the album tracks are better than the singles for my taste. Interesting to hear this after listening to the new Dua Lipa album just yesterday. I would much rather listen to this again. 7.5/10, and 32/35 for 1985.

This is going to sound like insanely high praise coming from me, but this is just a comparison. This is a techno album in a similar vein as The KLF's- Chill Out. Inasmuch that it's a mostly ambient/sound collage kind of album with brief experiences of techno elements. I think I had started to listen to this one other time and never returned to it, but I'm definitely on board now. I'll probably listen to it again today at some point. I'll have a better grip on what I think about this after some more listens.

Tender Buttons by Broadcast
I've never heard a full Broadcast album before, and this was a decent introduction. All of the songs were nice, but there weren't many standouts. Their indie(tronic) style was really interesting and worked most of the time. I liked the atmosphere a lot too, they know how to craft an album. 40 minute runtime was spot on. That being said, some of the songs were just a bit too short, they ended just when they were starting to get really good (especially near the end of the album). Didn't read into the lyrics too much, but it's always nice to hear some well written 2000s indie. 7.5/10
