It had been quite a while since I listened to Cannonball Adderley's "Somethin' Else," but I remember liking it a lot. As I pulled it out and listened to it fresh, I first thought "Why did I like this?" That's not to say I wasn't enjoying it; I most certainly was. But it didn't sound like something I would have immediately taken to early in my jazz obsession. This is nominally a hard bop album and Adderley is primarily a hard bop blower... but this was more laid back... more cool. Adderley was a sideman in Miles Davis' quintet, and fortunately for all concerned, including us listeners, Miles agreed to play sideman to Cannonball when Cannonball made a recording as leader. But while this is an Adderley album, the Miles influence is unmistakable. Rather than five dudes shredding through rapid fire chord changes, most of this album throttles back to at least mid-tempo, and all those notes are given space to breath. The result is no less than fantastic. So in retrospect, I have to say that this album is so good at what it does, that I must have been won over upon first listen despite it not being the type of album that usually grabs me. This is essential jazz to be sure.

That's a helpful review. I'm thinking this is definitely an album I need to check out based on your description (and the fact I really like Milestones and Kind of Blue, which ofcourse both feature Cannonball).
