Faust IV by Faust

Man, this album has the most confusing track list. Apparently there was a misprint on the original version and the tracks on Spotify are from the 2006 reissue. I think I listened to the whole thing but I may never know.

I wasn't expecting much from this one because I listened to Faust's first self-titled a long time ago and didn't care for it. But both BEA and RYM rate this one as better so I'm not sure why I heard the other one first. Anyway krautrock isn't a genre I'm a big fan but there are tracks here that sound like what I've wished the genre would sound like. Both of the Neu albums I've heard have interested me with their kind of mechanical rhythms but were ruined by ambient portions. There are some more subdued and drone-inspired moments here but it's very energetic overall, and the guitar sound is terrific. Hope to give this one a listen again soon to confirm my thoughts on it, but it's the best album I've heard from this game in quite a while.

None So Vile by Cryptopsy

Haven't heard any of those LedZep, so I'll help you finish the metal list with this one, which I've heard a lot about.

The Rhythm Of Life by Nexus 21

Well, this is certainly long overdue to be on the site. I'm surprised that this is not a more lauded album, because it's certainly one of the main links between Detroit Techno and the UK scene. Along with the better known 808 State, this album certainly deserves to be put up as an influential and foundational UK techno album. It bears the hallmarks of a lot of different Detriot techno artists, but it still manages to create something unique for it's time. A good addition to be sure.

For You by ๅฑฑไธ‹้”้ƒŽ [Tatsuro Yamashita]

I have only heard a few city pop albums, not enough to know much about it or be able to discuss whether this a good album from the genre or not compared to others. I don't quite get city pop. On the surface it shouldn't be something I like - adult contemporay synth pop rock with jazz and disco influences are not tags that normally appeal to me - but for some reason that mixture just seems to really work together and I have really enjoyed the few albums I have listened to, and this one was no different. Every song was consistently both pleasant and interesting, good to laze around to while this is playing in the background, or suitable for active listening paying attention to what's going on in the song. Either way it was an enjoyable listen whose 39 minutes just flew by, surprising me that it was over already after the last song finished. I would happily listen to this album again. 7.5/10, and 20/26 for 1982.

I'm nearly all technoed out for a while Rocka but I guess I can do one more, so I'm thinking I might like Celestial Soul. Try that one.

I have now explored every decade from the 2010s to the '60s through this game. Next I'm not super excited about but let's have a quick look through the best of the '50s. I've only heard a handful of albums from that decade, and I would like a bit more knowledge and experience of music from back then.

Then Play On by Fleetwood Mac

My first time listening to this iteration of Fleetwood Mac, and they really are a different band. This is probably the mellowest blues rock album I've ever heard. Relaxing and pleasant as an hour or so of background music. But in terms of standout tracks or good material for active listening, I found it to be a bit of a letdown. The cover is the best part. 3/5.

None So Vile by Cryptopsy
None So Vile surprised me in more than one way. First of all, when I say the brutality and aggression here caught me off guard, I really mean it. It's next level stuff. Probably top 10 heaviest metal albums I've heard. Second, despite it being a bit raw and pretty brutal death metal, the technical prowess surprised me too. I mean, it's not like they're the only technical brutal death metal band out there, but for some reason I thought Cryptopsy were more on the sloppy side of the spectrum. Well they very much aren't. Lyrics and the cover match this intensity, they're very gory and blasphemous, the classic B-horror style. Don't think I'll be reading into them too much lol. Vocals are also relatively unique, barking growls and high pitched creaks are a bit hilarious at times, but more often than not they fit in and add an extra aggressive layer. I don't have any complaints here except maybe the lack of standouts. A fantastic album that I should've heard before. 8.5/10

Oh man some great albums there. Not sure what your thoughts are on Pearl Jam, so go with Closing Time, another fantastic and relaxing blues, folk and jazz singer/songwriter album.

Closing Time by Tom Waits

This is an album that has been on my to-do list for a long time, so I'm glad to finally hear it. I've been looking forward to checking out his less experimental and gravelly early work, and this did not disappoint. The vocals are better than on any other release of his I've heard, and the songwriting ranges from very good to great (with more tracks in the former category). My favorite is "I Hope That I Don't Fall In Love With You." Another thing to note about this album is that the sound matches the cover and title extremely closely. He perfectly captures the nocturnal, sentimental, and rather depressive atmosphere of closing time in a seedy bar. Although perhaps I don't have the credibility to say that, as I've never been in a seedy bar until closing time. Not an instant personal favorite, but definitely a possible grower. 3.5/5.

Celestial Soul by As One

This album started off slow, but as it went from track to track I was surprised to hear a tonally and instrumentally varied album. One of the better initial listens I've had of one of these albums so far, and I was actively invested in what was going on.

Saxophone Colossus by Sonny Rollins

So the more I listen to jazz the more I think I'm starting to get an appreciation for it. However I think I prefer the more experimental jazz that takes me by surprise. This album had that familiar feeling even though I hadn't heard it before. An enjoyable, pleasant listen but not very exciting. The drum solos were neat though. 6.5/10

Terminal Redux by Vektor

Vektor showed massive improvement from their first to second album, in sacrificing some of the rhythmic complexity for the sake of the melody and harmony. But, this album really just shows me a marginal improvement over the second. I still don't find them very convincing, especially the slower songs or parts. It isn't a terrible album, but I think I just have better stuff to listen to.

You kinda surprised me by jumping over the 70s and 60s from the 80s. Are you still going to do those decades too?

There's a lot of good stuff there. Switch over to some rock & roll:

It was probably just before you joined in the game, but I started with the '70s and '60s so I've aleady done them.
