I'm glad this finally got picked for me to listen to. Thanks! I loved The Clash when I was a teenager, and I would say they were one of the five bands that formed my affection for punk that I still have to this day (along with Sex Pistols, Dead Kennedys, Stiff Little Fingers, and Black Flag). I've been wanting to hear this for so long (I only owned four of their albums, and a compilation - I still haven't heard Cut The Crap) but I guess the 2 1/2 hour plus runtime kept putting me off a bit (I'm naturally stingy, and I could get up to 5 albums listened to in that time 🤣 ), but I needn't have worried. I listened to this in one sitting from beginning to end and was not bored for a minute of this. Although to be honest I probably could have done without side 6, but then again that means I wouldn't have gotten to hear the trippy Silicone On Sapphire, or the children's rendition of Career Oppurtunities (one of the highlights from their debut). So after one of the most successful and acclaimed punk albums of all time, a varied double album, how do you follow that up? With an even bigger triple album of course! With an even more eclectic range of influences. Some of which you would be very unlikely to hear from a punk band at that time. From electronic effects (like the space invaders and lasers sound effects on Ivan Meets G.I. Joe), to a waltz, to dub, to jazz, to gospel, to groovy blues, to psychedelia etc. Did I even hear some backmasking in there at one stage? And the young kid singing a verse of Guns Of Brixton at the end of Broadway was so cute. To me this daring variety shows a love of music and not a love of money, which I respect. 8.5/10, 10/45 for 1980, and just scrapes into my decade chart for now at #98.

This was loads of fun. 38 minute catchy post-punk revival with a lot of indie and post-hardcore overtones. Solid songwriting throughout, and my main gripe is that the guitars sound somewhat bland at times. At the quieter parts especially, like in the first half of "What Would Wolves Do?". They could be higher in the mix and punchier. But it's a miniscule issue. Chief said it: sometimes catchy and cool post-punk with some bells and whistles is all you need. 7.5/10

There's not many albums recorded in Hawaii, is there? Well, here's probably the best one ever by a wide margin, because it's an absolutely brilliant psych-folk album by a band that barely existed. Yep, these people came together and recorded these songs (maybe even in one session) and never recorded anything else under this band name. You may not even want to call them a band, because they didn't even play any shows or anything either. It's albums like these that keep the crate diggers digging. That maybe you'll find some private press record that was only heard by a handful of people 40 years ago, but should've been heard by thousands more. I'd highly suggest giving this one a listen. Stunning.
It's also another one that's worth thousands of dollars if you could somehow find an original copy (which I assume only exist in Hawaii) so keep your eyes peeled. 😲

I listened to this a couple times. First time I thought it was cool, kinda angsty, sounded like a proto-Mission of Burma - all in all idk I thought it was alright but not great.
Second time I liked it a lot more. Still hasn't blown me away completely but much closer to that on relisten. The somewhat psychedelic guitar parts in the epic title track were badass, and the lead singer while nothing special, certainly expresses an angry, jaded protagonist quite well. Overall, some really cool post punk, and it made me go ahead and listen to The Cure's Pornography as a result and I like this album much more than Pornography. It also inspired me to listen to athurd post punk album - Metal Box - and I like Metal Box a lot more than Youth of America. So that is a good indication of my thoughts here, better than The Cure, not as good as PiL, all bands are very different and shouldnb't be compared outside of when they released albums, and yet I am comparing them here for no reason.
blah blah blah... I gave this banger a 3.5/5 on RYM and its cool as heck most of the way through.

Torch Of The Mystics by Sun City Girls
This was interesting. It's some kind of experimental rock with either chaotic garage/acid rock or an avant-folk background (depending on the song) and a healthy dose of Middle-Eastern psychedelia complementing each other. I wasn't sold on every song, especially the more obnoxious vocal performances were just ok-ish, but it's still a very solid album and I love that cover. Space Prophet Dragon was great, the guitars shrieked and wailed in an almost atonal mess, which somehow made sense in the end. That was an excellent vocal performance too. The more folky pieces were also standouts, with or without the vocals. Seems to be a grower too, it has so many layers of weirdness 7.5 or 8/10

Happy Thanksgiving everyone. And compare to the last album, this was better. Maybe not the best country album from this year, Though I feel like I would hit a better album. Maybe that Aimee Mann record that is in the 101-110 slot. Some one will hit me a recommend from 1993. Better than Uncle Tulepo for me, but doesn't hit the higher highs of some of my recent favorites from this year. But if you want a rock/country record, give this a listen. Maybe it could grow higher but as of now, it is a solid great.
