My discoveries per year

Well! Here I would like to start with my own long term project taking advantage of the best BEA has to offer: overall charts from people who are as interested in music as I am. I already have year charts which are based on the albums I already own or know, but there are a lot of them which I haven't listened to yet and which might be worth discovering. I'd like to do this by going through the overall BEA top lists per year starting in 1963 which is both my year of birth and the year in which I personally think rock music started to become interesting. To keep it a bit varied I will skip through the years in five year periods, ie starting in 1963 then 1968 then 1973 all the way to 2013 and then back to 1964 and so on. Every year I will start with some stats of my personal chart in comparison to the overall year charts, both top 20 an top 50 and will start to listen to at least the top 20 albums I don't know and I'll hope to give some comments sometimes very short, sometimes a bit longer. I will also update my personal year charts accordingly. In principle I will use Apple Music to listen to the albums, which I suppose will cover most of the field. If a certain album isn't present in Apple Music, I'll have to skip it. I will try to listen to all the albums at least once and sometimes twice if I doubt, but I'll skip the really stupid ones (ex a Xmas compilation in 1963) and also other compilations, classical music, jazz and easy listening. This will be a long term project which means there might be times in which I will stop a bit of course because I don't want be stuck listining to albums of the same year all the time. However I suppose this will take at least a month per year. I will try to keep it up but please don't be mad if I give up (maybe already after the first year :lol: )

Black Love by The Afghan Whigs
After Gentlemen, this is also a classic by the Afghan Whigs with very good ones like Crime Scene Pt 1, My Enemy, Honky's Ladder, Summer's Kiss and of course Faded which can be played on my funeral if I find a priest who is not too conservative. But I'm happy to listen to this one many times before I die. The album rises from the 16th to the 9th rank of the year.

An album on my wishlist. I already listened to Saturnalia in a previous session but there's also this one which is actually an EP collection of singles:

Mini by The Wedding Present
But a very good one with a fine original version of Mercury and Drive as another highlight. Good for the 14th rank.

Under The Western Freeway by Grandaddy
Their first successful album and although a bit uneven also one of their better ones which is especially proven by Laughing Stock and of my all-time favorites Summer Here Kids on which Jason Lytle goes totally loose. The album rises from the 38th to the 31st rank of the year.

And an album on my wishlist:

Homemade Blood by Chuck Prophet
Chuck Prophet is the guitar player of Green On Red and the album sounds a bit like the band but without the psychedelic influences I like so much about Green On Red and without the great voice of Dan Stuart. While the guitar playing is decent, there is not one track here that I would want to listen this album back for.

Frank Black And The Catholics by Frank Black And The Catholics
I think the solo career of Frank Black is underrated and this album is criminally underrated. Of course the Pixies were better and I agree with most of you that Kim Deal did a better job after the first break up of the Pixies. But this is a straight-up rock 'n roll record and there is none of the weirdness of the Pixies and the first solo albums but I must say Frank Black is doing really well on straight rock 'n roll here. The album has great hooks, great general guitar work and great songs. I Need Peace and Solid Gold are good examples of this but all but one tracks (Six-Sixty-Six is the only exception) just do the same fantastic trick does it well. And goes from the 14th to the 9th rank of the year.

Redneck Wonderland by Midnight Oil
After a number of great albums this is only an ok one. The album is loud and amped up for Midnight Oil but that doesn't do the album any good. I won't say it's bad but it only lands at the 39th rank of the year.

Good News For Modern Man by Grant Hart
On this album Grant Hart creates his own version of a dense Spectorian wall of sound where organs, frantic drumming and that great Grant Hart voice are falling over each other’s feet. This is best exemplified in the long A Letter from Anne Marie in which he engages in a relentless groove which is glorious in its repetitiveness.RIP Grant Hart. And the album goes from the 32nd to the 27th rank of the year.

An album on my wishlist:

Birds Of My Neighborhood by The Innocence Mission
After listening to their new 2020 album I wanted to listen to the other albums of this band I didn't really know and this is my third one and again it is certainly not a disappointment. I absolutely adore the sweet voice Karen Petis (which sounds a bit like Harriet Wheeler) but the other good thing is the band always finds a way to make the already good (and very soft) songs a little extra by adding some interesting guitar part or some other magical touch. I'm a fan and look forward to hear their other albums as well and this one enters my year chart at the 20th rank.

Figure 8 by Elliott Smith
Maybe not the best album by Elliott Smith but just because he speeded up the tempo a bit on this album doesn't mean it's a bad one and that's already clear in the first track Son Of Sam. It's a long album so there is certainly some filler but I raised the rank of this album from 26 to 9.

Disco Volante by Cinerama
These years were a bit quiet from The Wedding Present so David Gedge formed this band in which the tempo was turned down a bit and lots of weird instruments like accordeon, the flute and so on were used. But they don't sound out of place and although this shows a very mellow side of the man, this album really appeals. And of course he still knows how to rock like on Wow. This album ends up at the 14th rank.

And I'm starting to think I pick fairly mellow albums (even The Wedding Present have a mellow side) after round 3 where I mostly listened to metal albums:

Touched by Ken Stringfellow
This Ken Stringfellow of The Posies indeed at his most mellow side and it produces little miracles like This One's on You, One Morning and especially the fabulous Uniforms. Tilly if you want a tip... And the album rises from the 12th to the 6th rank.

The World Won't End by Pernice Brothers
I didn't know this band and this is supposed to be their best album and I liked it. There's not really special about this again very mellow album but all tracks are good and thus good for a 17th rank of the year.

One By One by Foo Fighters
Unlike many people who think that FF make the same album time and time again and they became boring on this fourth album of theirs; well I don't. This is again a great album of theirs with tracks like All My Life, Times Like These, Halo and Overdrive (ok maybe their track titles are a bit boring). The album rises from the 8th to the 7th rank.

One on my wishlist:

Torino by Cinerama
A second David Gedge nearly solo album with a mix between total mellowness and Wedding Present swagger and where the staccato guitar strumming is exchanged by violins. And you know what: it sounds awesome. I especially liked Airborne and Quick, Before It Melts. Immediately earns its 11th rank.

The Wind by Warren Zevon
I suppose Warren Zevon launched a trend here releasing a last album in full knowledge he was going to die soon. And in fact it is also one of my favorites because it emits a strange kind of positiveness although some of the songs want to make you cry. The highlight is of course his beautiful and fitting rendition of Knocking On Heaven's Door and the album goes from the 40th to the 20th rank.

An album on my wishlist with again an album of my new discovered mellow band:

Befriended by The Innocence Mission
All the albums of this band contain at least one very noteworthy song and here it is Sweep Down Early. Overall the album is a bit more uneven than the other ones I already heard of them but overall still very much ok and good for the 21st rank of the year.
