Gifting you a magical pop punk single from Belfast band Protex. Instantly infectious this ear worm knows how to hit the dirt. Try not bop bopping along.
I've never really bothered with lyrics. It's just never been my thing. I like vocals. Natch. Love 'em. But, NOT the words. No. It's the sounds I crave. They're like another instrument to me. Something that just goes with the guitar, bass, and drums, ya know. And then Skinny's Hip Hop Tournament happened. And I just had to try to understand. I was clearly missing something that others were getting. Some key ingredient. So I started reading the lyric sheets. Started following the stories. The rants. The pent-up anger and frustration. About a system that was fixed and rigged. That had put targets on their backs. And made it nearly impossible for them not to explode back in rage. In anger.
Crass knows all about that, too. And their lyrics are so similar to hip hop lyrics it's mind boggling. Sure. It's coming at it from an entirely different angle. A different take. But reading the lyric sheet for The Feeding of The 5000 actually helps me understand Hip Hop even more. Crass were some woke-ass motherfuckers is what I'm trying to say. And their political proto-hardcore message resonates with me now far more than it ever could have when I used to listen to Minor Threat back in the early 80s. Because of my privilege. Because I'm white.
If you're into hardcore punk, this Proto-Hardcore/Anarcho Punk document is essential listening. And reading!
aka That's a wrap, folks! My New Year's resolution is to listen to LESS music. A lot less. I have a new project that I need to devote myself (health & tai chi related), and, weirdly enough, this little music hobby takes up a lot of time. I'm a perfectionist in a lot of ways.
I'm not quitting BEA or anything like that. (I still gotta win that Hip Hop tourney after all. ๐ ) I just won't be writing about music for the foreseeable future.
Peace, brothers & sisters! And thanks for all the support! ๐

That's a shame, this was probably my favourite running diary on the site. All around the place and always fun, in addition to great writeups. Health comes first though, good luck with that tai chi related project ๐ _________________ Overall chart Fake overall chart
Yikes! I'm such an idiot. I didn't mean to alarm anyone. I got a couple of PMs asking me about my health. My health is (mostly) stable with no changes for a couple of years now which is pretty amazing. I have a girlfriend and go out and have all sorts of fun which is a flat out miracle. As many of you old-timers like me know, I was fighting for my life just a few years back. I have Behcet's - a serious Auto-immune disease. And I literally traveled the world trying to cure myself. I tried everything - supplements, diet, surgery. You name it! What finally worked was Tai Chi & Chi Kung. I found a Master in Malaysia and then in China and then right here in Chicago that taught me (through Tai Chi) how to reduce the inflammation that's wrecking havoc on my body. And it's been so good just being a Dad and a boyfriend again! My kids - Tilly & Genni - are the greatest! It was fun to just feel human again. Now, it's time for me to take my training to the next level so that I can help other people. It's time to tell people my story.
Sorry that alarmed some of you! I really appreciated all of you who reached out either here or by PM. You ROCK!!! ๐
