The vocals are a standout here, and the album starts of well with some sad, melancholic lyrics backed with some pleasing and interesting alt-country instrumentals. However the album's other strong point, it's consistency, also becomes it's flaw, as the depressing songs start to become depressing, the musical patterns keep repeating and become sameish, the tempo remains incredibly slow-paced throughout, and there is no positive respite or hope in the lyrics at all. Even the closer with the hopeful title of You Will Be Loved Again did not fool me and felt like the song was saying the exact opposite. Still I can't deny the quality throughout, it's just my personal enjoyment of the album that suffered. 7/10, and 49/64 in my 1990 chart.

So after getting a bit of a sense of 1977's top 10 yesterday, finally get to continue with 1993. And this was excellent. Very compact. Has a lot of energy and menace. And does some interesting things sound wise to keep this varied. Why isn't it higher? Well compared to albums like Mezcal Head or Earth 2 or Painful, this album with its more abrasive sound isn't as intoxicating in a personal sense. As well as this year has a lot of this sounding style of rock so you could go to any album and find something that hits you on an individual level. But still a worthwhile album and would appear on my actual top 100 for 1993 whenever I get to that. Grade:95

Sorry Iโve been gone so long. I donโt know what is happening, kinda just lost interest in almost everything for a couple weeks there. Finally came back to listen to music this morning.
This was really great once I did listen to it this morning. To say itโs all star band with 2 of the greatest vocalists ever is obvious. The songs arenโt overly adorned, they are just stripped down and beautiful renditions of standards, and there is real heart pumped into em and real chemistry between the band and the people with the names on the album as well as between Ella and Louis. Just a solid album, that although not quite
My tempo, is just really well done and something I can recommend as a good album.
The second album from Aimee Mann under my belt. And while it has been a bit since I heard her 2000 album, got to give that a re listen at some point, there is a part of me not knowing what I prefer. Because this was also quite wonderful. Musically is quite varied and while there might be some songs that won't everyone away, Aimee or her musical crew "if she has one" know how to keep the tracks entertaining. Also love that this album is just a ball of fun. As well as Aimee is just an entertaining performer and great singer. There are also some cues that I could see being musically shown on Fiona Apple's sophomore record. If there was any complaint, it would be how I mention where not every track hits that absolute high for me. But I still think this is one of the most exciting debuts for the 1990's. Grade:95

Bend, for listening to Discovery again due to the news, Romanworld will be the pick.
Sorry Luigii and Chief, seems this is a near 2 hour album and only available on YouTube (less convenient is all), so might take a back seat especially with hip-hop.
Do you want a change for The Purist? I do know it's on I Tunes.

Great album! The production is impeccable: butter smooth, varied, and inventive, with near-perfect execution. Jackson's vocals are very strong. The songwriting is quite good as well, covering love and sex from many different angles. No significant negatives, but if I had to nitpick, some of the songwriting isn't top-tier and the album length could use some minor trimming. 4/5.

thanks for the offer - I'll give it a spin still. I probably should take a break from hip-hop anyway.

For what it is, it's incredibly well produced/mixed and more importantly musical. Can see why this is charted. For me, did it tickle me ears and did I enjoy it, yes. Did it feel closer to music "you test your soundsystem out with" - yes. You know what I mean, it's like REALLY good sounding music, but it's not passionate or too interesting. I mean at time there were lyrical stuffs like send me an angel and feel no pain and stuff that felt real, but it also dunno... didn't match the rest of the music. So don't get me wrong, just random thoughts I had, focusing on the positive, this sounded amazing to me and was very intriguing. I also found this playlist which wasn't 2 hours... dunno. I guess I should've taken more time to confirm a legit listen, but I'm not playing the game with a score tonight. This was great. At it's best moments, when this goes for the abrasive but welcoming ear candy that envelops the listener in a sense of pleasure that I'll never get tired of. And there are other times where they go for a more ambient direction with both Popol Vuh tracks or the track The Drowners where by the end of that song the textures hit. But I would say a couple tracks especially the third track where the drums and the soundscapes just don't hit me personally. But still, I do recommend this. Grade:85
