This is my third record from Porcupine Tree. Have both there 2005 and 2000 albums underneath my belt. Love there 2005 album and the 2000 was also excellent as well. And this is not an exception either. Maybe it doesn't have the budget that a later album in their catalogue would have, but it was quite enticing. Especially when, even though this was early in the band's career, they were going to be a band to reckon with in the prog subset. A genre during the time wasn't part of the zeitgeist for the time. Like the only thing that I could theoretically complain about was the ticking through the last track. Otherwise a stellar album to continue my hot streak with the band. Grade:95

@Bend: I wish I was. Especially if that payed some good money.
@Led: I get that feeling with Cynic. Curious if that effect gets better on there other two albums?

Kokkinos, listen to Tyron. Was gonna give you Carnage again, but I want a bit of variety.

Tri Repetae by Autechre
Cool textures and beats. Somehow it just didn't jam with me. Ok background music. I know this is probably the wrong place to say this since errybody loves Autechre. No offense or anything. Just I wouldn't like purposely put it on. It didn't emote anything for me other than cool beats and textures.

2. Off The Ground (I don't really understand how that man can keep making music)

Soul Journey by Gillian Welch

Another old-timey, earthy country album from Gillian Welch, with assistance from longtime collaborator David Rawlings. Beautiful vocals as usual, but with a couple exceptions, the songs aren't as good as the singer. I'd put this about on par with her debut, and prefer Time (The Revelator) to both. Soul Journey might not have much of a wow factor, but it is a very pleasant listen if you're in the mood for country. 3.5/5.

Love Deluxe by Sade
This was incredibly chill. Luigii - that seems to be your vibe man. I dig it. I personally need some piss and vinegar in my music. I did like this though. Pretty good album.

2. Baystate is this RYM R&B and then you plucked out female artists? Anyway, I'll return the Sade favor: Promise

You donโ€™t like punk, like old school 70s punk rock, Kokkinos? I suppose that may account for your dislike of Wire. Are there any punk rock albums just straight punk albums you love?

I can think of punk-influenced albums or albums with the punk attitude (but without the punk sound) that I hold in very high esteem. But when it comes to pure punk, sadly there's none. Ok, when I first discovered Never Mind The Bollocks... , it was a revelation and I was semi-obsessed with it for quite some time, but once I got over it I never looked back. On the other hand, it was a genre that was a product of its era and wasn't supposed to age well, the once perceived as socially critical vocals and lyrics quickly became whiny and irritating, the repeated use of the same simple structures with fast tempos and loud riffs that was viewed as a reaction to mainstream music is now ascribed to lack of musicianship etc. It perfectly captured the 70's Zeitgeist, let's keep it there. Of course this has nothing to do with the huge legacy it has left behind, so many artists have been inspired by it and it's impossible to think of today's music without it.

I understand your viewpoint. However, obviously, I disagree. I love raw, straight forward punk. Still some of my fave music to this day. But with Shame I thought they took that attitude of old school angry "whiny" punk and mixed with post punk and new wave influences nicely (namely the guitars of talking heads and the bass of gang of four etc.). But alas, differences of opinions. ๐Ÿ˜‰

To See The Next Part Of The Dream by ํŒŒ๋ž€๋…ธ์„ [Parannoul]

This is taken from chart comment. Wanted to add that I made a comment early that this didn't disappoint, not much. Well, I proceed to not come back to what may have disappointed me. lol. I made a mistake. Well, I liked it a lot, didn't love it. But its number 20 of 2021 and may rise. Noise Pop and drwampop and shoegaze are NOT usually anyway my thing. So that may the disadvantage of this clearly very beautiful and lovingly crafted album. anyway, onto the canned "review"... :

"(Nostalgic and bittersweet album. Manages to take that 90s Shoegaze/Noise Pop influence and warp it to something very personal and moving. When the album rocks it really rocks and when the big emotional screamed crescendos hit they really hit..)

Overall, I saw the growing hype for this album and I meant to get to it before the hype got out of hand. Well, too late. This is one of the surprise hits of the year amongst music nerds. And I listened with that in the back of my mind. I was thinking I may be disappointed. I wasn't. At least, not much.

The guitars and especially the drums here are excellent. The drums have a clear and crunching compressed intensity that is cool. Makes the otherworldly Shoegaze waves of sound a bit more grounded and tangible, which I much prefer over a general sense of just walls of s=disorienting pretty sound and noise. The guitar sounds are similarly cool, drawing not only from ethereal waves of sound in MBV albums but also from more clear and structured riffs you may find in a Smashing Pumpkins or more direct post-punk album. It's a nice mix.

The vocals are clearly very emotional. On some of the songs a clear Emo influence comes over the tracks, especially on the cathartic climaxes where the vocals scream with intense sadness or anger or some other passion.

The songs are consistently beautiful and not super samey. The more catchy alternative rock songs, especially "Analog Sentimentalism", "Excuse", and "Chicken" all have an infectious and catchy power to them. They somehow made me feel bliss by how damn great the tunes were and also a deep sad nostalgia. Great tunes.

The Epic songs, of which there are 2 and arguably 3, (10 minutes, 9 and a half minutes and 7 minute jams are these ones) are cool and give the music time to build and breathe. The best of the big towering tracks is track 6 "Age of Fluctuation". It is also maybe the heaviest song here and very noisey. But it creates a really inviting world that explodes into a screaming emo crescendo.

There are a lot of highlights - the guitars and their sounds, the drums and the way they are recorded, the excellent vocals, the flow of the album is good, the nice little unexpected touches that Parannoul throw in when least expected etc etc. The only tracks that I maybe wasn't vibing with nearly as much on my first couple listens were track 8 "Extra Story" and maybe "Youth rebellion". But really those will probably grow on me. This is a really nice album."

Promise by Sade

No surprises here. I love this album just like the other two I've heard from Sade. Smooth as silk, with excellent vocals and production that walks a fine line between immaculate and cheesy (almost always ending up as the former). The songwriting is not central to the success of the music, but it's solid as well. It was cool to finally hear The Sweetest Taboo after listening to Ms. Fat Booty so many times, and cool to realize the source of some samples, including an instantly recognizable DOOM flip. I bet this would have been even better if I heard it late at night. An absolute vibe. 4/5.
