Maximal pop.
First half well crafted.
Second one's redundant pastiche.
This album surprised me a ton! A good mix of Nu Metal and Rock & Pop elements. Tight vocals, good production, and some fun writing.
Very debut album for sawayama, interesting future ahead !

Great sounding album. The metal/pop mashup in the first three songs is amazing. Rina effortlessly goes between soft and savage throughout but it's especially noteworthy in the beginning. There is a marked increase in sentimentality on the second half that I liked but not as much as her more badass side.

Okay I've returned to this album after the new year and I finally have come around on it. Dynasty is as strong and anthemic as an opening track can be. Then to follow it up with the super catchy XS then the nu-metal screamer that is STFU makes the opening moments amazing. I do think there are a few misteps most notably on Akasaka Sad which I can't stand and Comme Des Garcon which was one of my favorites on first listen but I find myself disliking it the more and more I listen to it. Paradisin', Love me 4 me and Bad friend is another great stretch but the album sort of goes down from there. The last 4 tracks are fairly fun but not near as amazing as the highlights.
'Sawayama" has a lot of the 2000's in it. The nu-metal guitars and dance-pop tracks are a flashback at first, but with time I am reminded of my mixed feelings on those sounds. The tracks feel a bit too similar at times. A lot of the album concepts are memorable in theory( beauty standards, one sided friendships, etc.) but the writing just doesn't flesh them out enough. On a more positive note, I think Rina's vocal performance is enjoyable and lush. The album just needs something more.

An album I more appreciate than like. Some of it is a little too mawkish for my taste, and the songwriting is super hit and miss. But it's a phenomenal display of influences and styles that come together with surprising consistency. I can't wait to see what Sawayama does next.
A variety mix of Nu Metal, R&B, Dance Pop, Disco and much more. There is so much to discover, which is exciting and worth listening to. It is not a masterpiece, but as debut it is very meaningful. 8 of 10. tip: XS

rina's ceiling for potential is ridiculously high and this is great, albeit with its hurdles
