It's also on spotify but seems to be under a different title (self titled) and different cover art and different year with one extra (great) song at the end. This was a great find. I really liked the album.

I should play this game again... I need to find my rec hehe... but I saw a Beck conversation and those don't happen a lot.

I'd check out The Information, imo it's considerably better than Modern Guilt and is a decent follow up to Guero if you like that one. Modern Guilt has this kinda cool 60s vibe, but otherwise, I agree, it's not an album I've really ever reached for, even if not bad... it's just not great. I remember hearing something happened to him or something which is kinda why the hiatus/pause on output from 2008 to 2014. Morning Phase, tbh feels a lot like Sea Change's warmth, but the sadness/emotional strength sucked out of it. It's warm and pretty but that's about it. I'm one of those one offs where I actually LOVE Colors. Somehow Beck going Pop sounded really good to me. Hyperspace is a little boring for me. Anyway, here's my Beck and hope that helped to answer that I vaguely remember something happened with Beck and Modern Guilt was kinda the result of that and it suffered accordingly, even if stylistically I dig, the style is just a cool shell put over mediocre songwriting/performances.

5.0
Sea Change (my top 10)

4.5
Guero
Odelay
Mutations
The Information
Midnite Vultures (was a grower, but eventually ended up in my tier two)
Colors

4.0 (may be too high... bias set in... hehe... probably deserves more a 3.5 range)
Modern Guilt
Morning Phase

3.5
Mellow Gold (it's good, but it doesn't yet have the magic that comes later imo)
Hyperspace
Guerolito

2.5 (wonder if I need to give this more attention... pretty bad rating... haha)
One Foot in the Grave

That's how I'd do it... I guess.

Also, Beck has been a huge part of my musical life almost all my life... so sorry for the fanboi post.

No problem RTB, love the post. We have the same top 4, means I'm doing something right even if I'm not in the deep end of Beck fandom hehe. Interesting that you and Purple have Mellow Gold in very controversial positions, 1st vs pretty low. Personally loved it back when I first gave it a shot, but on recent listen it felt like there's several of his best songs ever and a whole lot of cool experiments let down by meh songwriting.

Blade Runner by Vangelis

Sometimes I wish that there was a way to create decade charts with albums recorded in that decade even if released in another decade. That would certainly make for more accurate decade charts and year charts in a way, but it would provide other problems. For sure That Misfits archival album Static Age would go on my 1970s chart, and this would certainly fit nicely on my 1980s chart. Still is good enough to be on 1990s chart. Anyway, yeah. Would also make my 1930s chart look amazing and be basically a repeat of what you can find on my 60 Shades of the Deep Blues Custom chart.

Not sure why I lead with that. I probably should say something about my thoughts on this album. Its great, excellent, fantastic even. It is maybe the greatest movie soundtrack album I've ever heard (never been a fan of listening to soundtracks, so not much competition) and as a distinct work of art it holds its own as one of the most fragile, wonderful, sad and contemplative records I think I've ever heard. This opinion I am sure is due also to having a fondness for the film and loving how the music manages to compound with the brilliance and thought-provoking themes of the film. This is an album easy to get lost in and one that makes me think deeply about uncomfortable and quite daunting things and concepts. That is even true in the middle portions of the album where there is no dialogue taken from the film to push to the forefront of your mind the concepts. The instrumentals are so achingly sad and lost.

Tracks that stick out are here, despite the whole thing flowing beautifully. Namely I consider "Rachel's Song" to be the most beautiful thing I've heard in a long, long while. - such a masterful piece. Other tracks like "Memories of Green", "Tales of the Future", "Wait for me", "Blush Response", "Blade Runner Blues" and the end run where the film's iconic dialogue comes back in is stunning and a perfect way to wrap up this album. One of the greatest Ambient and electronic albums I've heard. Truly adore it and I am glad I have revisited it. Essential listening for sure.

3.

Took EPs off and took archival off and am so deluged by Live albums I'm thinking of removing them too and just working through LPs and Mixtapes, while keeping one EP on - an EP longer than most albums - on as well as the Live albums here I will probably keep and as they are nominated I'll fill this list more and more with LPs and Mixtapes.

1. Fโ™ฏAโ™ฏโˆž by Godspeed You! Black Emperor/1998/RYM #46 all time Live/Archival/Mixtape/Studio album or EP (yes I've heard this. Its been forever. Remember the guitar solo and the spoken word poem with the canadian guy and...that's it)
2. Exmilitary by Death Grips/2011/RYM #196 all time Live/Archival/Mixtape/Studio album or EP (I included mixtapes and voila! This appeared and I realized I've never seen this famous album on a RYM list before because I never ever included mixtapes! Anyway, I have heard this. When it came out. Should revisit.)
*3. Irish Tour '74 by Rory Gallagher/1974/RYM #196 all time Live/Archival/Mixtape/Studio album or EP (I have never heard this famous blues rock album.)
4. Larks' Tongues in Aspic by King Crimson/1973/RYM #199 Live/Archival/Mixtape/Studio album or EP (I've probably heard this album 3-4 times and the first track 10 times, yet never with much attention glued to the music and certainly less than this album and band deserves. Considering my love for other albums released by them in this era, I figure I should really listen and write a comment so its seared in my brain.)
5. Powerslave by Iron Maiden/1984/RYM #237 all time Live/Archival/Mixtape/Studio album or EP (I don't think I've ever finished listening to this. If I have, I don't remember. One of the all time great metal records yet Maiden has always been something I don't love or even usually like)
*6. Blues & Roots by Charles Mingus/1960/RYM #268 all time Live/Archival/Mixtape/Studio album or EP (I actually think I've never listened to this. Ooh how exciting for me.)
*7. You Will Never Know Why by Sweet Trip/2009/RYM #282 all time Live/Archival/Mixtape/Studio album or EP (Here is a well timed one what with sweet trip releasing their much anticipated follow up after 12 years last week. Have heard their 2003 album. For this game actually)
*8. The End of Evangelion by Shiro Sagisu/1997/RYM #285 all time Live/Archival/Mixtape/Studio album or EP (Here is one that is COMPLETELY new to me. Really the rare highly ranked album where I really have no concept of what to expect... OH and I'll ddo what I assume is the related highly related EP as well.)
*9. Songs for the Deaf by Queens of the Stone Age/2002/RYM #289 all time Live/Archival/Mixtape/Studio album or EP (It is one of my great accomplishments and shames of my life that I can say with some confidence I've never listened to a QOTSA my entiure life as far as I know. This is particularly wild considering when this album came out and took over the rock and metal world I was 13 and really into metal and garage rock... how did I miss this? I think I kinda rebelled against it for some reason just decided to not go with the flow. ANYWAY, soon I may listen to this. Shall see.)
10. Geogaddi by Boards of Canada/2002/RYM #309 all time Live/Archival/Mixtape/Studio album or EP (Music Has The Right To Children at one point kinda took over my life and was on my overall chart briefly. Need to relisten to that as well but overall pretty familiar. This one, however, while i've heard it a couple times I never feel like I gave it ample time. Really wanna listen and listen good.)

New Heroin by A Neon Rome

I seriously looked up the members of this group because I thought it could've been a side project for the lead singer of the Violent Femmes. I mean it isn't, but shared some vocal styles for sure. As for the music, it touches a lot of 80s bands I love (U2, REM). So I really dug it and can see why it was in craola's top 10. THANK YOU PurplePash for doing what I should have done and read the track titles - made my experience MUCH more enjoyable.

@LedZep - yeah Beer Can and Loser are easily best tracks ever written. I've tried a few times and I guess I'm just one of those Beck sell out fans... hehe. Just can't get into it, but I think your assessment is apt - really cool discoveries on the album but kinda lackluster somehow and maybe you are right, in the writing.

2. Mercury - try Blues and Roots I think top 5 Mingus for me for sure (if not top 3?)

3. Craola Top 100:
1. The Return Of The 5000 Lb. Man by Rahsaan Roland Kirk
2. Afro-Harping by Dorothy Ashby
3. Love And Devotion by Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan
5. Baabel by Leรฏla Martial
6. Mingus Moves by Charles Mingus
7. Nina Simone And Her Friends by Nina Simone
8. The Exotica Album by ร˜yvind Torvund
9. Junjo by Esperanza Spalding
10. Circles by Anne Paceo
11. Sargasso Sea by Pram

You're welcome. I totally agree with the Gordan Gano comparison. As I was listening I was thinking this is like if Violent Femmes did post-punk. I love Violent Femmes and post-punk so no surprise to me this went straight into my deacade chart! Thanks to RTB and Craola!

Mysterious Traveller by Weather Report

After no jazz being chosen for me for a long time, back-to-back Wayne Shorter albums! Funny how that happens. This is the third album I've heard by his fusion group Weather Report, and I love Black Market and Sweetnighter. Mysterious Traveller doesn't quite stack up to those albums, but it is a worthy listen in its own right. It's less funky and (appropriately for the title and cover) more spacey. Although future bassist Pastorius is better, everyone's chops are strong here throughout. Meanwhile, the songs are solid but not special. I'd probably pick the title track as my favorite. Nubian Sundance would be much better without the fake live crowd sounds. Overall, the album is groovy, atmospheric, and well-made. It could work well as a soundtrack for a range of everyday activities. 3.5/5.

2. Haven't heard this, but it's on my to-do list. Really enjoyed her 1970 album, as I love jazz harp. This one looks like it's more lounge-oriented.

Afro-Harping by Dorothy Ashby

3. Alphabet Game, Cohort 9 (5 picks left)

I've been thinking about how the alphabet game is pretty unbalanced. So I'm balancing it by making sure each letter now gets a selection for every 1000 songs in my library.

V/A: Under The Skin - Ice
A: Super Trouper - ABBA
A2: Tri Repetae - Autechre
B: Black Dots - Bad Brains
B2: (Untitled) - The Byrds
B3: III - BADBADNOTGOOD
B4: Another Music In A Different Kitchen - Buzzcocks
C: Know What I Mean? - Cannonball Adderley & Bill Evans
C2: Black Sunday - Cypress Hill
C3: Cannonball Adderley Quintet In Chicago - Cannonball Adderley Quintet

Afro-Harping by Dorothy Ashby

While this had some really rad elements to it, I couldn't help but just think it was the best lounge music ever, which isn't a great statement in my book. I was really conflicted the whole time. Huh, this is pretty cool... lounge music... hehe. Which is weird because sometimes REM or Beck will play with lounge music (typically a song), but they typically do so in ways that's even more trippy or perhaps even anti-lounge. Anyway, I'm glad I gave this a spin - even if typically I give lounge music something like a 2, I gave this a 3 because it's pretty good for what it is. I am curious what other album you listened to BayState... definitely intriguing and willing to give more a try.
