I have similar feelings the more I listen. Then again considering my favorite genres (folk country singer/songwriter stuff and punk and non extreme metal stuff) youโd think 1970s would be the goat decade (and for me, I still think that is my stanceโฆ itโs changing ever so slightly) and also considering that my favorite artist BY FAR no competition released 1 great album in the 90s (Time Out of Mind), I think that also heavily favors the 60s, 70s. As of now itโs 1970s followed by 1990s and then there is a wide gap in my mind and then itโs 2010s/2000s/1980s/1960s free-for-all.
Also 1988 and 1989 were (obviously) harbingers if so much of the great music and innovations of the early to mid 90s.
As of now 1988 and 1994 are neck and neck for my next silly fun deep dive _________________ -Ryan
1994 is easily the year before the 10s that I've done the deepest dive for, which is because it's my birth year. On the one hand, it was fun and I'd be interested to see your takes on the same albums. On the other hand, because I've already done it, I find it less interesting than '69 or '77. I would pick it over '88 though.
One other thing about '94 is there are so many acclaimed albums by open fascists/crypto-fascists (especially in black metal and neofolk). I ended up skipping them, but I guess Soulseek exists. _________________ Join us in the canon game :) / Add me on RYM

Interesting. Although my charts which have been recently defluffed of all albums I have heard but donโt remember or have no opinion on, 1969 and 1977 are for me what 1994 is for you. Those 2 charts were the only year charts up to 100 at any point before current year. Stillโฆ part of my idea is to lay out the 10-20 favorites from that year and reposted to them as well to see what has changed in intervening years. Not just new discoveries I suppose. Maybe Iโll do something like the dihansse system of 1 new discovery and 1 old favorite in the collection or whatever. A balance. Idk.
As for the fascists point, that is interesting. I canโt say I have ever done research on the politics of artists before checking out the music, and I canโt understand the words of black metal and kinda hate all the neofolk Iโve tried to get into (letโs face it it has only been a few Current 93), so I doubt I will notice. I wonโt notice for awhile anyway. Like, I know Burzum dude is a murderer. That is about all I am thinking with for 1994. _________________ -Ryan

Yeah, I don't typically care about an artist's ideology, but I loathe fascism, and they often incorporate it into the lyrics/music with the goal of influencing the listener on a subconscious level. I totally understand why people want to listen to the acclaimed albums regardless, but it's good to find a way to avoid streaming and therefore financially supporting a literal Nazi murderer like Burzum imo. _________________ Join us in the canon game :) / Add me on RYM

Agreed, that's one of the biggest problems with all the extreme or edgy scenes. Don't stream or buy anything from problematic artists (or at least try not to) is a good rule. I've developed a practice of reading a bit about the artist whose products I'm consuming, if nothing else it's fun discovering all the interesting facts and life stories. On the other hand, streaming an album means giving less than a dollar to the writer/performer, so I get why people don't bother with these kinds of background checks. Don't think I've ever been subconsciously influenced by the Nazi ideology though ๐ _________________ Overall chart Fake overall chart
Okay, folks, I have decided on 1988. I know it must seem silly and dismissive that I got this feedback and yet, in the final end, I remained unchanged. I was very very close to audibling to 1994. But the more I exhaustively went through charts and lists and artists and stuff for 1988 the more I was thinking "Yep, this is a good place to start" - the hip hop isn't as intriguing as 1994 - not by half - and the indie rock and alternative rock isn't quite the same in sheer varierty. BUT the thrash and hardcore and grindcore and noise rock selections are intriguing. Knowing me I will audible at some point sooner than I should. But who knows.
Anyway... thanks for you folks' insights and comments. _________________ -Ryan
I have stripped my 1988 chart down to 10 albums and where available I have taken comments I have already pre-made on this diary and pasted them their. These 10 were selected as the 10 out of 50 or so albums that I really truly feel like I have a good handle on and don't feel a need to revisit. These are NOT my 10 favorite. I have removed Public Enemy and Napalm Death and many other great GREAT overall chart level albums from my 1988 chart so I am reminded to revisit for this project. The 10 albums are simply the ones most clear in my noggin. These are ranked and graded. If you want you can look at this mini-chart before I start adding things:
I will List them here as thbey are rated and with a note on their grade.
#1. Daydream Nation - Sonic Youth/10
#2. Spirit of Eden - Talk Talk/9.5
#3. Leprosy - Death/9.2
#4. Miss America - Mary Margaret O'Hara/7.5
#5. Green - R.E.M./7.4
#6. ...And Justice For All - Metallica/7.0
#7. Slow Turning - John Hiatt/7.0
#8. The Trinity Session - Cowboy Junkies/6.2
#9. Rattle & Hum - U2/5.4
#10. Down In The Groove - Bob Dylan/4.0
As I listen and comment on albums and revisited and reconsider I will add albums to the above chart and list here on the diary. Much like how the amazing Repo did his 1980 thread. I am taking inspiration from him but not starting from scratch.
I have culled a list on a dorky excel spreadsheet of approximately 60 albums to revisit and 200 to newly explore. Along with these, I always will be looking at some of your 1988 and 1980s charts for other stuff I maybe wrongfully ignopred or never heard of. I am also very interested in some personal albums that maybe have like 100 RYM votes and 5 BEA votes that I never in a million years would have thought to check out that maybe you feel are lost gems. I will be doing Compilations and archival and live and I will be doing LOTS of EPs and adding if they fit BEA rules and are good enough to add to this site.
I am excited to explore. I will move slow. It will hopefully open my eyes to new favorites and also make a little dialogue here. Feel free to make fun of me when I give extra love to underserving New York Hardcore albums or Grindcore trash just because it seems to be my flavor and obsession of the month! (That is sure to happen.) _________________ -Ryan
