No (rock) band has adjusted as well to middle age. None. Rush got married. Had kids. Moved to the suburbs. Bought a minivan (with heated seats and a real, live TV!). Picked up yoga and networked their way to a fairly decent country club with a few tough waterholes (The sand trap on the 11th is a bitch though. Don't let anybody kid ya.)
And then it gets even better, folks. They STAYED faithful to their wives. Were good Dads. (Coached the hockey team and didnโt even yell! That much. Ok! Sometimes. Itโs ice hockey. In Canada! What do you want?)
Perhaps the greatest streamlined, tight-cornered, futuristic, plastic album of all time. A massive and never repeated accomplishment.

Let's make one thing clear, Carmen Electra is not to blame for this. Prince is to blame for this. Carmen happened to move to Minneapolis and caught Prince's eye, and he immediately wanted her in the Paisley Park crew. So, he produced an album for her. Why did it have to be "hip hop" though? It has a certain early 90s cheese charm, and Carmen is beautiful in the videos, but everything else about it is totally not great.
For some reason I think I remember talking about Tank one time, and I've heard that one. I think it's great.

Yeah this is the one I wanted to hear from Rocka's chart. Mainly because I think the title track, the only Traffic song I know that I am aware of, is great. And the album didn't disappoint me. Six well written rock songs that ar proggy at times, folky at times, jazzy, funky, sprawling jams at times, etc. Yet it's never too much of any of those things, maintaining a great balance and consistency of vibe and tone throughout. I must admit I have a soft spot for a flute being used as the main musical line, which happened a few times within a few songs. But again, not too much flute. I am actually quite impressed with this album and liked it very much. 8/10, and for now 24/59 for the year but I can see it rise in the rankings with future listens if I become as familiar with the other songs as the title track.

Preserved In Torment by Mortiferum
Thoroughly enjoyable cavernous death metal. As one reviewer put it, "reverb-drenched, massive-sounding, absolutely filthy". And in the sea of similar old school bands, Mortiferum sounds like a mature, seasoned band, while many other caverndeath (yeah, that's short for cavernous death metal) bands are simply Incantation worshippers. Huge tunes, great riffs, top notch songwriting. I'm gonna be returning to this one, no question. On the first listen, it's low 8/10

Ridin' Dirty by UGK
90s hip hop typically isn't my favorite. I know many people feel about the opposite way that I do, but for me the golden age of hip hop was the mid-late 80s, and then again in the late 00s-mid 10s. I know I've talked about this previously, but the prevalence of skits in 90s-00s hip hop really turned me off of the genre. I really hate skits lol and sometimes that really gets in the way of me enjoying the genre from the era.
That said, while I wasn't really expecting to love this album, there's no skits to be found. Even the brief intro and some sort of spoken word-like bits in the outro had some great appeal. Start to finish this album was great, it's got the old school production sensibilities of 80s hip hop but stylistically shares more with later rap genres. Hear me out: this album almost sounds to me like a very early cloud rap piece. It shares a lot with mumble rap despite UGK not mumbling.
Really enjoyed this even more than I thought I would.

From the first few songs I thought this was going to be a nice pleasant chilled Sunday morning listen, with some folk rock type singer/songwriter popular at the time. But then Bill Fay started to do some really interesting and experimental guitar things, giving it an edge I wasn't expecting. The mix of noisiness and some quite lovely guitar playing and melodies, combined with some thoughtful and lightly spiritual lyrics gave this a uniqueness I appreciated. Exemplified best on the title track, and the highlight from the album. Not every song worked for me (mainly the softer more straightforward tracks) but it was Laughing Man where I realised I was definitely going to like this album. From then on was when I got the most of the album, especially the last three tracks to finish the album on a high. Really glad I got to hear this as my last pick for 1971. 7.5/10, and 37/60 for 1971.
I really liked the only Devin Townsend album I've heard so try Ocean Machine: Biomech next.
Time to leave 1971 now that I have fleshed out my chart nicely and jump forward another ten years to 1981. I've been looking forward to this year. I was 11 & 12 years old then and after a couple of years of liking songs on the radio, 1981 was probably the year I started getting into specific bands and artists, but not yet albums, and so there maybe a few here I never got around to hearing down the track.

I loved the more house aspects of this, while the vocals and poppy/downtempo parts weren't as cool imo. Downtempo is generally very hit or miss for me, not one of my top choices when it comes to electronic music. It's much more "mainstream" sounding and easy on the ear than the house I usually like, but that didn't seem to be the problem at all. In fact, I'll call this the best Bonobo phase I've heard to date. The songs were constantly engaging, shifting, incorporating various clichรฉ "summer vibe" sounds, but doing it in such a sophisticated and highly likable way that I couldn't hate it. Thoroughly enjoyable, chill vibe. The favourite part of the album would probably be Elysian/Closer, a microhouse inspired duo with its blissful, melancholic melodies and snippets. 8/10

I love bounce production: it's minimal, beautiful, catchy, danceable, and distinctive. The craftsmanship on this album is no exception, and Partners-N-Crime flow really well over it. They also mix in some Caribbean flavor on a few songs. The lyrics are serviceable - nothing super unique, and quite party-oriented as the title suggests, but they don't weigh down the album either. Overall, Pump Tha Party is fun, upbeat, and a very good listen. 3.5/5.
