绿帽 Green Hat by Tzusing

Tzusing's been on my radar for a few years, so it's nice to see him get wider recognition. Dude knows how to produce. Some really cool pieces here. Perfect recipe kinda stuff— dancefloor industrial, not too harsh, not too soft, slightly experimental, 5% manic, production value to the 9s— it's a super fresh, breathable take on what's usually such a dark corner of music.

Live At Bush Hall by Black Country, New Road
Not like you don't know this exists, but this is a great live cut. Fantastic to see that BCNR will survive the departure of their lead singer, no problem. I was curious how these guys would stack up live no matter what (due to the intricacies/precision/complexity of their compositions) and they put on a masterclass. Phenomenal energy and musicianship— not an ounce of lost momentum. Think I even prefer this to their debut. Hoping to watch the film eventually.

Ichiko Aoba With 12 Ensemble (Live At Milton Court) by 青葉市子 [Ichiko Aoba]
Speaking of live albums, Ichiko Aoba returns with a small string ensemble and reminds us she's some sort of god. It's... breathtaking. Flawless. Ethereal. Angelic. All those good words. The ambience she captures here is a dream. Almost a by-default year-best so far.

This has a lot of early 10s vibes— Romy/Rhye/Beach House/Holter/smidge of Barwick— it's almost like 2011 was put in a blender. Lovely work though— hazy/dreamlike/rococo/yearnful— cellists are certainly stealing a bit of recent spotlight. I think the P4k reviewsums it up with far more justice than I can.

It's on YouTube! (the official version). Highly recommend; it's fairly rare that I prefer a concert film to a live recording, but the film is a great watch.
Will definitely check out the Ichiko Aoba & Parannoul live albums as well, those sound great
boygenius album is great, but not any better than any of the solo work of Baker, Bridgers, or Dacus. I should be seeing them live later this year, looking forward to that and hopefully they'll play some of each of their solo stuff as well. _________________ 51 Washington, D.C. albums!
