RIP Andy Rourke.

Great debut! The muddiest production of all their albums, but so many fantastic songs that make it hard to say where I'd place this one among their discog. Probably third, after Queen is Dead and Meat is Murder. But their discography is so consistent, man. I love this band so much!

I actually think this is their best album, and while I wouldn't say the production is "muddy," the big problem with it is the snare-drum sound, which is too loud and lacks definition. The guitars are also mixed way too low, at least relative to the bass, though they at least corrected that somewhat on later albums.

As I've often noted though, I'm an old geezer type and I was hearing these albums as they were coming out, with a year or more in between each one, and there's often a fair amount of "nostalgia preference" for the first thing you hear by a recording artist that you ended up liking over a long period of time. Which is basically to say that I'll freely admit the subsequent three albums were more musically and technically competent.

Can't argue with that. That's pretty much what I meant by "muddy". Sounds a bit more "lo-fi" (not actually) than their later albums - but I think that's kind of a good thing. Gives it a really unique, nostalgic vibe even for youngsters like me. And I honestly can't choose between this and their next two, love all three. Strangeways is great too, just a bit more uneven. I can personally hear them breaking up, on that album.
