My discoveries per year

Well! Here I would like to start with my own long term project taking advantage of the best BEA has to offer: overall charts from people who are as interested in music as I am. I already have year charts which are based on the albums I already own or know, but there are a lot of them which I haven't listened to yet and which might be worth discovering. I'd like to do this by going through the overall BEA top lists per year starting in 1963 which is both my year of birth and the year in which I personally think rock music started to become interesting. To keep it a bit varied I will skip through the years in five year periods, ie starting in 1963 then 1968 then 1973 all the way to 2013 and then back to 1964 and so on. Every year I will start with some stats of my personal chart in comparison to the overall year charts, both top 20 an top 50 and will start to listen to at least the top 20 albums I don't know and I'll hope to give some comments sometimes very short, sometimes a bit longer. I will also update my personal year charts accordingly. In principle I will use Apple Music to listen to the albums, which I suppose will cover most of the field. If a certain album isn't present in Apple Music, I'll have to skip it. I will try to listen to all the albums at least once and sometimes twice if I doubt, but I'll skip the really stupid ones (ex a Xmas compilation in 1963) and also other compilations, classical music, jazz and easy listening. This will be a long term project which means there might be times in which I will stop a bit of course because I don't want be stuck listining to albums of the same year all the time. However I suppose this will take at least a month per year. I will try to keep it up but please don't be mad if I give up (maybe already after the first year :lol: )

Rubbing Doesn't Help by Magnapop
Magnapop is one of my favorite girls band and especially their first albums were classics in my view. This album isn't as special as those ones (maybe a bit more grungy and less melodic and catchy) but is still very good with still many standouts but not classics: This Family, Open The Door, Come On Inside, Down On Me, An Apology, Juicy Fruit, Cherry Bomb; you name it. The album descends from the 12th to 23rd rank of 1996.

Telephono by Spoon
This is the debut album of Spoon and it's clear that they hadn't found their own style yet. So they just made a copycat Pixies album. The wonderful thing is that they're actually good at it and the songs aren't really complete copies but the influence of the Pixies is all over the place (rough edges included) and I like it very much so the album enters my 1996 year chart at the 24th rank.

Urban Hymns by The Verve
Used to be a classic for me but not evolved to a semi-classic. But of course plenty of very good tracks. The album goes from the 20th to the 21st rank in my year chart.

Contemplating The Engine Room by Mike Watt
This second album of this weird artist is indeed weird but also in a way very punky and jazzy and seems to form a unit somehow. Intriguing enough to enter it into my year chart although the first part is the more satisfying part. It enters my chart at the 58th rank.

In The Aeroplane Over The Sea by Neutral Milk Hotel
This album was already ranked the last in my year chart and I know for many people this is a classic album but after listening to it again I can be rested assured: I don't like this album. I don't like the singing, I don't like the way the songs evolve, there's nothing much I like at this album, except maybe for Ghost. So sorry, an album I'm gonna evacuate from my year chart.

For All The Beautiful People by Swell
In fact an album I already owned but was not on my year chart and I think I now remember why. There albums of Swell I like but not this one. Everything Is Good and Oh My My are ok but otherwise I miss a bit of originality and spark. So also a reason not to include it.

Utopia Parkway by Fountains Of Wayne
This album is more Teenage Fanclub than Weezer and that's why I think this is my favorite album of theirs. The best track is Amity Gardens and the album goes from the 27th to the 18th rank of the year.

Free Expression by Velvet Crush
A bit in the same league but here maybe a bit more powerpop in the style of Matthew Sweet and that's not surprising because he produced it. Nothing special but very much ok and the album lands at the 44th rank of my year chart.

Wasp Star (Apple Venus Volume 2) by XTC
Not at all their best album, this one. But Church Of Women and The Wheel And the Maypole and some others are enjoyable enough so the album goes from the 65th the the 30th rank of the year.

Asleep In The Back by Elbow
In hindsight Elbow is not really my favorite band and the same goes for this album although it's still one of their better ones. Enough said: this album moves from the 56th to the 57th rank (the lowest one).

Truth Be Told by Shed Seven
This album got terrible critics and of course it doesn't reach the heights of A Maximum High but I really think it is a good album. Sometimes it makes me think a bit about Oasis but these are not the best tracks because these go to tracks with the best harmonies like Never Felt So Cold which is the hightlight of the album. It enters my chart at the 34th rank.

Steal This Album! by System Of A Down
Certainly a band which has their own place in rock history not in the least because of the very different voice of the Armenian singer. But to me this is one of their lesser albums and moves from the 40th to the 44th rank in my year chart.

Close Cover Before Striking by Luna (US)
In fact a companion EP to Romantica with also two covers: a rather subdued Waiting On A Friend originally by The Stones and a mesmerizing cover of Kraftwerk. This is not a bad EP but I would advise to other albums if you want to discover this fantastic band. Enters my year chart at the 35th rank.

Hail To The Thief by Radiohead
I'm especially a fan of the first albums of Radiohead but this album is rather good and also features more guitars than on their other post OK Computer albums. So it moves from the 62nd to the 53rd rank.

And an album from my wishlist:

Today Is The Day! by Yo La Tengo
And an EP as a companion to Summer Sun of which it also lends the title track of this album but in a much harder (and better) version. There's two other covers: in this case a much softer version of Cherry Chapstick from And Then Nothing Turned Itself Inside-Out and a cover of Bert Jansch. The other three songs are ok so this EP enters my year chart at the 23rd rank.
